I am having constant sharp pain on my left side, worse when I stand or walk. i am worried it might be a cyst. Has anyone ever had a cyst and if so does it hurt bad like this? I have an IUD as well, so I am a bit concerned it may be that. Any help would be appreciated

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the info and advice. I called the nurses line and explained my situation b/c of course my pain was gone by Monday morning. Anyway she said it probably was a functional cyst, but if the pain came back at all I was supposed to go in right away.
Thanks again!

I had a hemorrhaging ovarian cyst about 4 years ago. Yes, the pain can be excruciating. I was close to screaming it was so bad (and I've had a child so I know what pain is). I didn't know what it was at the time, but went to the ER after the pain started. The doctors thought it was a gallstone but an ultrasound revealed the cyst. I had had sex with my fiance that morning and apparently bumped something that triggered the bleed. There's not really anything that can be done for it except to give you pain medication, unless it's really advanced. I was in pain for two weeks and could only lie on my left side in bed. After a couple of weeks my doctor checked it again and it had shrunk. Needless to say, go see your doctor, don't let it get worse.

Hi~

I did have an ovarian cyst when I was 18. After months of lots of pain and being sick the DR's figured it out. They kept a watch for a month and then I was scheduled to have it removed. I did have a laprascopic procedure but when then went into remove it, it had went away on its own like it typically does. Every women hets cysts around the time of ovulation but they should go away each month during your period. If you have further questions that I might be able to answer feel free to email me at ____@____.com

I am not sure about an IUD. Hopefully some of what I said will help.

I would call your OB/Gyn- there are weird things that we never think of that could be going on.

I had similar (I think) pains a couple years ago and didn't do anything about it right away, thinking it was a cyst. After a couple of nights of excruciating pain I went to my OB/Gyn and found out that I had adhesions from my c-section...Actually, I found out that that's what it probably was; had to have exploratory surgery to confirm that this was the case and to fix the problem.

If it quacks like a duck....But, especially since you've got that IUD, it'd be worth having your doctor take a look.

The only organs on your left side are the colon, intestines and your left ovary. If you have a cyst, it would probably only cause severe pain when it ruptures. I would be the most concerned about your IUD and infection. Do you have a fever? I would schedule an appointment with your gyno and if you develop a fever, go to the ER...immediately! Just remember, I am not a doctor, so definately get an opinion from yours.
