Hi Mamas! Our extended family decided this year to try a big family vacation, and it was wonderful! We went to North Myrtle Beach with my SO's family, and then to Ocean City, MD with my family. We are all talking about renting a house in the Outer Banks next year, but have no clue where to start. We all agree that we would like to stay slightly outside the really busy areas so we can have a more laid back, less crowded beach location, but we don't want to be too far away from anything fun to do either.
Do any of you have any suggestions on where to go?

What can I do next?

Duck and Corolla are both really nice. OBX are pretty quiet in general and family-friendly. If you rent a house rather than staying at a hotel you will have a slightly less crowded beach!

Manteo is really nice. My mom just vacationed there in June and is still raving about it. Sort of of the beaten path as most people choose the main strip.

South Nags Head Beach...close to the lighthouse. It's 20 minutes from the busy restaurants and shopping...perfect. And quiet. We just went this year and loved it!

My SIL loves Avon. We stayed farther away, but it wasn't worth having a place on the water b/c it was full of oysters and the kids couldn't swim. Canadian Hole is a great place for families - very shallow and calm for a far way and not far from waves if that's what you prefer.
