Oprahs Shows on Hormones-anyone Relate?

Ladies,
I have not felt like myself since I had my daughter almost two years ago. Right after she was born I felt extremely tired and achy, and I was having alot of pain in my abdomen and right leg. I called my dr's office and also called the nurse who came to check on me after the birth and I was told "that's how it is after you give birth". Six weeks later I was back in the hospital with a blood clot and my iron was half what it was suppose to be. After all that it took me along time to recover and get the baby weight off. BUT I still do not feel like I did before my daughter was born. I have to drag myself out of bed, no matter how much sleep I get. I'm not motivated to do the things that I used to enjoy doing. I get headaches. I can feel myself get very irritated about things that really shouldn't be that big a deal. I could not care less about sex. I have been to my dr since I have been able to get off the extra Iron and blood thinner and I have told them that something is not right. I was told it takes time for your body to recover, and I do understand that, but it has been almost two years!
I have been watching Oprahs shows on hormones and I think that might be it! I'm almost 38 years old, and I'm wondering if my hormones are messed up and if they should be back to normal by now. I am due to go back to the OB/GYN soon and I think I'm going to ask them to check my hormones. Can anyone relate? When do you start to feel normal again?

I have had problems with hormones and some of the same issues as you. I was tested by my DR for thyroid etc but all was normal so I took myself off the pill and started taking vitamins and I am feeling much better. I actually started feeling better a few days after stopping the pill.

I would have your doctor give you a thorough checkup, where they test your blood and urine for cell counts, thyroid, anemia, etc... I have a 4 year old, and I am still tired a lot. I have been having sinus trouble. I was on 2 cycles of antibiotics in January, and I don't think the infection completely cleared up. I am pursuing more holistic methods to enhance my health, including a vitamin and herb supplement for immunity boosting, doing yoga and belly dancing (which I also teach), and going to the chiropractor. Also reducing my intake of caffeine and sugar. In the morning I open up the curtains to expose myself to sunlight. I always read that it's important to go to bed and wake up at about the same time. Being a mother to a young child is extremely demanding. Don't underestimate the hazards of sleep deprivation. It really takes its toll and can take a long time to bounce back from, even once you start to sleep regularly again. Try to be gentle with yourself, eat whole foods, including whole grains, lean protein, and plenty of fruits and vegetables, get some exercise a few days a week, and demand that your doctor get to the bottom of any underlying medical issues. Good luck and blessings to you, R.

Hormones can play a HUGE part in this. HOwever, are you doing all you can to change your energy level? Proper diet, adequate hydration, exercise, adequate rest? These all play a HUGE part in energy level. Lots of research out there to back this up. I see it ALL the time in my clients. You'll be amazed at how QUICKLY making some of these changes will help......even headaches (in adequate hydration). You might also want to grab a copy of PAIN FREE by Pete Egoscue. Sounds like you may have some dysfunctional issues as a result of improper alignment (headaches, issues w/ the leg etc.)

I have the same thing minus the blood clot. I saw a chiropractor in FL this past Christmas who practices Neural Organization Technique, Neural Emotional Technique and Integrated Kinesiology to help me get a handle on things. It's not your typical chiropractic stuff but is very interesting and I learned a lot about my body. Bottom line, for me he said that I suffer from adrenal stress and suggested I take a tablet called 'DSF' which is available from Nutriwest and I need to walk at least 2 miles everyday. I'm also going to see an herbalist b/c for me, I don't find the traditional OB/Gyn's all that helpful in troubleshooting and I need someone who can look at these symptoms from a different angle. 'The Herbalist' in Mount Healthy has come highly recommended so I'm going to check her out and see. I'm not all that "into" herbs but I figure it can't hurt to talk to her and listen to her recommendation.

Dear R.,

I recommend that you come to Columbus to see my doctor. she is an Integrative M.D. who will spend time with you, asking a lot about your symptoms, diet, activity level, etc. She doesn't expect her patients to come running to her for every little thing, but she does all she can to help them find a natural way of healing and getting well. If medication is called for, she will prescribe it, and she is always happy to work with the patient's regular medical staff to find solutions to help the patient reach optimum health. Please see if you can make an appointment with her. I can almost promise you that she will help to get to the bottom of your situation and that you will start feeling better soon, and mostly with proper diet and supplements. Her advice has made a tremendous difference in my health, and I recommend her to everyone I know who has health concerns.

Hi R.,
I also recommend the Arbonne Balancing creams(they have worked really well for some of my clients), good nutrition, lots of water, etc.

But definitely get your blood work done. Female hormonal changes and thyroid changes can go hand in hand so I def think a thyroid check would be beneficial too. It's always good to see what might be off and then address from there.

If it is perimenopause, you might find some of these resources helpful.

I also can relate to the way you are feeling. You should have been feeling a lot better by now if it was just because of having a baby. It could also be your Thyroid along with Hormones. I would see an Endocrinologist and not leave it all up to my OBGYN. I also take Melaleuca Vitamins they are the best ones I have ever found and believe me I have tried them all. If you want to know more about them Just let me know

Dear R.,

HRT isn't what it was cracked up to be and there are possibly serious side effects. Here is another option.

When you crash the car and go to the ER they know exactly what to do to keep you alive and get you back to health. However, when you don't feel well, you are up the proverbial creek. Conventional medicine doesn't know what to do with you. However, we do have a group that does wonder for people in you situation. Dr. Merkle is like Columbo in a white coat. He will look at you in total, figure out where your body is not operating at peak performance, how you are toxic and help you rebalance without medicine and its side effects.

First suggestion is that you visit his web site - www.3000health.com - read some case histories and listen to some radio shows. You can also listen to him live on Sat (11:00 WHIO 1290AM/95.7 FM or on the net if you are out of Dayton.) A consult and blood work are worth the effort but you don't need to come to Dayton to do it as they use www.LabCorp.com who has offices all over.

I know they are very good because they helped my friend Becky who had ulcerative colitis from when she was 9 until her mid 40s. She was a nurse and none of her doctor buddies helped. Dr. Merkle had her under control in six weeks by changing her diet and supplements.

God Bless,

S.

I feel like that when I am on the pill. I have switched pills to try some different combos, but nothing seems to work. I felt my best when I was off the pill. My hubby has volunteered to get "the snip", so I am looking forward to being off the pill!

Good luck. Hormones can be very powerful things and can make some odd things happen. Don't underestimate the power of the hormone!

The same thing happened to me right about your age, maybe 2 years earlier. Yes it could be hormones but it could also be part of perimenopause and /or a thyroid problem. I had both. You really need to have a complete physical and have them check your thyroid among other important vitals. YOu also need to look at your parents/siblings health histories. Some things are heriditary(misspelled). My family has a lot of autoimmune diseases so I was already on the lookout because I have 3 younger sisters whose symptoms started before mine. SO I kept bringing that up to my doctor. They ignored at first but then I was diagnosed with Grave's disease which is an overactive thyroid. I am now in remission but it would have been easier if someone would have done a better job of preparing me for it. I have been waiting for 10 years for my body to get back to normal and now I am trying to figure out what the new normal is. I hate the way I react to things that I find my self hiding out from people because I never know when I might react away I can't control. It's aggravating and embarassing. You need to see an OB/Gyn or a internist who handles women's issues. I would not see the same dr who delivered your babies unless he specializes in that. Good luck to you. In addition, I have been seeing an osteopath doctor who has helped me handle things as naturally as possible and I have been doing yoga for 2 years now. Accupuncture is great.

Hello,
Yes, I totally relate. I had my baby almost 3 years ago too and haven't felt well since. I've had blood tests, etc & they can't find a thing. I saw my OBGYN recently & they just wanted to put me on the pill again which I didn't do well on in the 1st place. I'm sorry I don't have any advice for you. I just wanted you to know you're not alone. I hope you get some answers.

Hi R.,

I have no idea about your leg cramps... but you may be right about your hormones. But maybe you should also consider your thyroid? Thyroid disorders can arise during and after pregnancy and can cause the symptoms you listed from headaches to slugglishness. You should check out the group on yahoo: http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/NaturalThyroidHormones/

The Group is mostly for people who are excited about the natural drug, Armour, for treating their thyroid. I just joined and am looking into the drug for my own thyroid disorder, but if you post your question there, I'm sure others would recommend you have your saliva tested and/or bloodwork on you adrenals as well. They're really supportive.

Don't give up hope,

V.
