Both of our kids are in LISD and are doing wonderfully. My niece is also in a different LISD school and doing great. I would recommend it to anyone...
However, as with any large district, you're going to have individual schools that are better or worse than others. I would check out your school at http://www.lisd.net/lisdschools/index.html. You can find out how the school your kids would go to was rated by the TEA, along with some student/teacher ratios, what additional programs (specials, etc.) are offered at your school (they vary from campus to campus... some offer a language, where others offer drama, etc.). Although many LISD schools are rated Exemplary or Recognized, there are those that are simply "Academically Accecptable" (one step up from Academically Unacceptable). In addition, if the school you're considering has a PTA website, I would see how active the PTA is and even try to speak to one or two of the parents (some LISD schools have 40-50 parents on their board (lots of "co-chairs", while others stuggle to keep 4-5 parents on their board).
Good luck! I know this is a big decision.
