One Year Old Getting Sick

I
have a three year old and twin one year olds. For the past five weeks one of my twins has woke up at least once if not twice a week in the night throwing up. The first time it was all three kids that were sick. Since then, my three year old has been fine. Both of my twins have been sick several times but my one, lukas, has been more often and worse than the other. We thought it could be their food so we changed their diet several times. We thought it could be something off of some old toys, we threw them away. We thought I could be the nursery at they gym but this all started before going there. I am at A total loss about what's going on. Any ideas or suggestions would be very much appreciated. I hate seeing my baby sick!

This is the first time they have been in a daycare setting, but, we are constantly at parks around other kids. They had a lot of problems when we first started going around other kids but seem to be doing ok now.?

I would take them to the Dr but I am afraid he would say its just a virus, keep him hydrated and he will be fine. Even on the days that he is sick he plays normal, and eats and drinks normal....

Thanks in advance!
H.

Take your child to the doctor. Don't worry about if he will say it is just a virus. It could be something more serious. Like I tell my boys, what's more important being embarrassed or doing the right thing.

This is a long shot, but do you have gas heat? if so, do you have a carbon monoxide monitor? If not, please have someone check your house for carbon monoxide -- they will do it for free -- and make sure you do put carbon monoxide monitor in your home, and I would put one in the children's nursery if they are getting sick that often. I'm not saying it is that, but it was the first thing that came to mind when i read your post and it never hurts to be careful. It is probably a virus, though, that is just passing around from child to child, but please do check for carbon monoxide if you have not already.

Sometimes one child sees what will get attention, tries it and keeps on. They can make themselves sick. If it's occasional, check what child is doing during day, maybe not getting enough attention. If you're watching diet, and play is normal, eats and drinks normal, then something else is wrong - attention. Sometimes one child will need extra attention.

Hi H.!

I would begin by taking him to the ped. If they tell you is a virus then you can rule out other concerns. If this is the firs time going to a nursery/ child care setting is normal for kids to get sick often in the beginning as they buid up their inmunne System to that setting. That happens when they start a new school, etc. As a Ped told me once, their body needs to get use to "the new" viruses.
And with twins is sometimes a little more complicated because they seem to pass it around. I have twins and if one is sick, I can expect the other one getting sick sooner or latter. Lukas may just have a weaker inmmune system than his brother. Also consider that if their older brother is bringing a virus with him eventhough he is not sick, the little ones may be the receptor. That also happens to me, specially when the twins weren't going to school yet. Their older brothers brought the germs home for them (sort of speak).
I would try to find out what can you do to boost his Imunne S, maybe vitamines, certaint foods and I know some people really beleive in cleaning up the environmets of toxins, cleaning products and so forth.
I wish you the best and I hope he gets better soon, I really understand what you are going through. I am here if you need me!

I am sure you are just about overwhelmed! The thought of cleaning up after 3 vomiting children, not sleeping through the night without getting up, calming them, changing babies, sheets, cleaning up floors . . . I went through this with my 3rd child and he had whooping cough. I would definitely pursue taking them to the dr. and seeing if one is having a different problem. You sometimes can figure it out on your own but sometimes I have to admit I need help. That said, I don't always take the dr.'s word for gospel.

The one boy may be having trouble with a sensitive reflex to vomiting now, or a small hiatal hernia which a chiropractor who knows how can adjust (my son had this, esp bad after a little vomiting bug). Dr. Albury Gardner is a miracle worker with identifying what is wrong and what will help.

Bless you and hang in there! they do grow up . . .

I have 6 year old twin girls and boy do I remember those sick days that seemed to go on and on and on. I personally would tkae him to the Ped. As a rule of thumb in my house if they have been running a fever or throwing up for more than 48 hours - I take them to the Doctor-unless I am sure it's a virus and my mom is also a Medical Assistant and sometimes I go to her for advice :())
Most times I am told that it is a virus and feel like I just wasted forty bucks for nothing, BUT at least I have reassurance that it isn't anything more... so forty bucks seems worth it in the end. Also keep in mind sometimes they might have a virus and might turn into something more that WOULD require a visit to the PED.

H.,

I'm sorry he's been sick. Personally, after this many weeks I would take him to the doctor and have him checked out. Maybe he just can't seem to kick the virus or maybe because he's been sick his immune system has been compromised leaving him susceptible to more germs. Whatever the case...I'd bring him to the dr to have a better look.

I hope he gets well soon.

On a side note...is this the first time that the kids have been in a nursery setting? I only ask because the first time I started bringing my daughter to the gym nursery she was sick constantly it seemed. Once her immune system built up she could go there without catching every little thing there.

Hi H.,

Babies only get sick if their immune system allows it. Some people think that the immune system is strong just because there are no symptoms, like colds or coughs. That's not necessarily true. Sometimes a weak immune system doesn't show up until it is more serious...

We weaken the immune system by exposing our little ones to toxins. Their lungs are smaller, their brains are smaller so the percentage of toxins that we expose them to is higher for them. We wrap ourselves in laundry detergent and sleep on bleached sheets. Kids are actually closer to the floor than we are....don't laugh :)...airborne toxins and outgassing from chemicals are heavier than oxygen and float down... that's where our kids and our pets are. If the immune system is weak, it will come out in many different forms.

Daycares are required by law to use more toxic chemicals that we have to use at home so I don't think your little one is getting sick necessarily from being around other kids. The environment is just different.

All that to say this...you can build your little one's immune system and of course help the entire family if you detox your home. The immune system will strengthen and he will be able to fight off the toxins in other environments better. That will keep him healthier his whole life.

If you want to know more, let me know. My family doesn't get sick anymore and I was the kid in and out of the hospitals all my life. It's wonderful being healthy.

God bless,

M.

You said you changed their foods but not for sure what they are or have been eating. Kelloggs did just release the other day a voluntary recall of some of their crackers containig peanut butter. Here is the link for more information. http://kelloggs.mediaroom.com/index.php?s=43&item=230

Is it possible that they have been eating these crackers?? I buy the Austin brand but my children haven't shown any signs of being sick other than the typical winter stuff. Otherwise, you need to take your kiddos to the DR.

Good luck!

Take your child to the doctor. Let the doctor decide if he/she thinks it is a virus. The doctor can give you good suggestions on what kinds of food/when to give them for your baby.
