Ok to Sleep on Side?

Ethan just turned 6 months and for the past couple of nights has fallen asleep on his side. I've kept away from any position other than his back because of SIDS and I know that there is still a chance of that occuring within the first 12 months of life. Should I be concerned with him falling asleep on his side? I know there's a chance he could roll over onto his tummy while on his side. A little piece of mind would be great help for my sanity =) Thanks ladies!

My daughter was the same way and was fine. our doc said that if they get that way on their own it's not a concern b/c they have the strength and sense of self to get into an other position if they need to.

If he's doing it on his own, I wouldn't worry about it. At some point (probably really soon) he may start rolling over onto his tummy too. As long as you are not placing him on his tummy (or side) he should be ok.

Heather,

I think its fine if he got there on his own- but just make sure during the day that he has a lot of practice on his tummy- getting his strength and practice rolling with him.

Hi Heather,
Our pediatrician told us that once our daughter started rolling to her side we shouldn't be as worried about SIDS as the highest risk is during the first 6 months. Just make sure there isn't any toys or blankets in the crib and it has a firm mattress with a tight fitting sheet.
Sincerely,
L.
PS Make sure Ethan has plenty of tummy time while he is awake and once he starts rolling completely, help him practice during the day so he doesn't get too upset at night.
