Oily Hair - Vancouver,WA

Ever since I went off birth control, and then even more so after becoming pregnant and giving birth to my son, my hair became progressively more oily. I have tried a few natural and organic brands of oily hair shampoo, but they have not done much for me. Has anyone else out there experienced this hormonal-based oily hair, and have you found any products (particularly natural ones) or home remedies that have worked on it?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your advice! My hair must have been overstressed, because it actually helped to stop washing it for awhile. But it is still very oily, so I am planning to try the baby powder and the apple cider vinegar next. We'll see what happens!

I can totally relate, I used to be able to go days without washing my hair and it just got shinier now, 6 mos past my third and last pregnancy it seems like my hair looks oily just hours after I wash it. The theory about washing it less is proven in other circumstances but my hair resists normalcy:) I have heard that rinsing with apple cider vinegar helps dry out the hair and replace it with shine:)

Try using baby powder when it seems to get oily..... Im a 24yr veteran Hairdresser it works best just after it starts to get oily I have told several of my clients and its helped tremendously , But alot also depends on the thickness or thinness of your hair doesn't hurt to try.....

I've found that increasing my amount of B-complex helps alot. Since the oiliness seems to be coming from the hormonal change, that B really works. Also taking something with lots of carotenoids helps decrease the oil for me too. But it has to be a very high quality supplement or it won't work. Believe me, I've tried!

My 18 year old daughter was complaining about how oily her hair had become. She felt it began to look and feel oily within 12 hours of washing it. (This was related to hormonal changes, but not to pregnancy.)I suggested that she go a week without washing it to help solve the problem. Over spring break, she didn't wash her hair for 6 days, but she did get it wet and put conditioner on the ends. Now, she's back to washing it every other day, and it doesn't look or feel oily on the in-between day. Maybe this will work for you too, if you can stand to go a week without washing your hair. Good luck!

I don't have much advice, but it's interesting that your hair gets oilier; mine gets drier. I can go 3-4 days without washing it when I'm pregnant--have to wash every other day when I'm not. Hope you find something that works!

Hi K.,
I've heard that washing your hair actually promotes oiliness. Apparently, you're only supposed to wash it twice a week and I've know people to stop washing their hair altogether. This might work if you have thick straight hair but has always sounded a little itchy to me! Good luck,
S.
