Nicky was home from school sick on Tuesday and Wednesday. He had some stomach virus - I took him to the Dr on Tuesday as he had vomited several times - I kept water and Gatorade in him - at least what would stay down. Had a slight fever - nothing off the charts - Dr said - it's a virus that's going around - 24 hours usually. He complained that his stomach hurt - he looked a little peaked - not his healthy olive skin (does that make sense? he was NOT yellow - just not normal).
So today I send him to school. Teacher just e-mailed me saying he's crying, STILL saying he doesn't feel well, etc. I took his temp this AM - perfect for him! He LOOKED tired, but overall - no vomiting or diarrhea for 24 hours...
I replied to his teacher to package him up and send him to the nurse. I will pick him up. Just called the nurse and gave her the heads up.
So what am I missing? No fever. Stomach STILL hurts he says. he ate FINE this morning. NO issues. Yes, he admitted to being tired. I feel like I'm missing something - you know - not a red flag - but that his stomach still hurts (although he said he felt good, but tired this morning)....was he enjoying his mommy time? Me on the couch with him?
If this were your child - what would you do? Take him back to the doctor or just keep him "low" today?
I picked him up from school. I told him to go to bed - he's there- out like a light. Poor guy!!
Our rule is if you stay home sick - you are in bed or on the couch - it's not "let's watch TV all day"

My best friend had this and it is like the stomach flu. She was out of work for a full week (first sick "days", BTW in TWO YEARS). She went back this week and still feels awful. Even though she wasn't having any more vomiting she was still sick with stomach cramps and achey. Her doctor told her that it is taking 7-10 days to full recover.

I would give him one more day to rest (or two since tomorrow is Friday). If he has been vomiting and having diarrhea for a couple of days then his body will still need rest to be strong again. It could have also been that he ate too much this morning and his tummy wasn't ready for so much food.
I hope he is feeling better soon.

Keep him low today, let him rest and let him walk around - I bet he is gassy after all that (could be cause for stomach ache).

He may not still be "Sick" but his body is still weak. Vomiting for that long takes a LOT out of you. My son did that once and I saw he was still not himself so I kept him home another day. But you never know.
Hope he starts feeling like himself soon!
Good luck and God Bless!!!

I had a stomach bug one Xmas that made the muscles of my stomach sore and ache--I mean it HURT-- for several days. Even after the violence of the vomiting was past.
Let him recoup at home at least one more day. Easy to digest foods, clear liquids, a blanket and the TV remote and some books. When he starts to feel better, he won't be content to lie there...

There is a bug going around that seems to be lasting around 4 days - with stomach pain. My sister's kids have both had it and they seemed tired, but fine, during the day, and throwing up and feverish at night. I hope he feels better soon.

He's probably still just recovering. I did the same thing with my son last year.. he had strep throat, had been home for a few days - on antibiotics - no more fever... so I sent him in... he was no longer contagious - the nurse called me and had me come pick him up - he was still just not feeling good. I felt bad that I'd sent him.
Keep him home, have him rest, then see how he's doing tomorrow.

He probably just needs to lay low for another day. (Even if it's just needing a mental health day and to cuddle with M. on the couch.)
If he's not doing better by tomorrow (or if he says he's fine, and then after an hour in school suddenly becomes "sick") then I'd have a talk with him. You know him better than we do. If he's not faking, then call the Dr. If you think he's faking it, then find out what's going on in school that is making him want to hide at home.
*hugs*

I had that lovely stomach virus and a few days after I had finished with the not so fun part, I felt like I hit a brick wall. I woke up on that day and felt fine. I started cleaning house and then all of a sudden I was dizzy and so very, very tired. It took me another two days to get over it which has never happened before. This bug has a one-two punch. Hope your little guy feels better soon. I was down for 4 days total. :(

I see you have a lot of answers already, but I don't have time to read them so I apologize if this is a duplicate. My son had the same thing a couple of weeks ago, was home from school for 3 days (Monday-Wednesday), took several more days for him to get back to normal. It started for me on that Thursday night, was sick as a DOG that whole night & all day & night Friday both vomitting & diarhea. By Monday morning, my stomach literally still actually hurt, but I was able to eat & keep food down. I think it was just kind of the trauma of the illness & trying to get the good bacteria back to a normal level.
It definitely is a nasty bug! It landed my littlest in the ER last week. Everything I have heard from people who had it said their tummy's hurt for a couple of days after b/c of the trauma it took while sick.
I say let him come home and relax for the day.
Hope he feels better.

Aaaaw, poor fella. I've noticed the symptoms of some of those stomach bugs can skip a day or two, then come back. May take awhile longer til he's 100%. Hope he feels better soon, and that nobody else gets it. Sucks when the weather's getting nice to be sick inside!

Obviously he needs more time to get over the 24 hour bug.
In our house sick at home means watching movies or tv all you want and you get to eat/drink whatever you want whenever you want!

No you didn't miss anything. Your child just needed more time to recover from his illness. Vomiting can take more out of your physically than you think.
Give him a hug and send him to school tomorrow.

I kept my 16 yo home two days last week. It came out of nowhere. She got sick at church on Weds night and just wasnt' herself until Sunday evening.
On Friday she was severely dehydrated which the dr said was most of her problem.
So soup, apple juice, water and jello went into her.
It wiped her out.
She just needed the time to recoup.
Keep him home, give him snuggles, send him back MOnday. :o)

We just had a bug/flu go through our house. I had it almost a week ago & yes if it's what we had it takes days to get over it eventhough the vomiting & diarrhea stops. With the one we had - you feel hungry more & as soon as your stomach is a little empty it start to hurt again.
Yes, the skin color changed, you are wone down for a few days & the BM's take a while to get back to normal as well... eventhough they are not watery anymore. I had 2 babies with it - so changing their diapers was not fun & being vomited on wasn't either, which is how I got it.
Hopefully he will be feeling better by Monday... might be better to keep him home tomorrow as well. Just see if there is any work he can do at home so he doesn't get to far behind in school.

I'd let him lay low one more day... if he still feels icky tomorrow, take him to the doc. After going to the doc, I'd send him to school... you know him best; is he playing you because it's nice out today?
Either way, cuddle with him, keep pumping him full of fluids, and I hope he feels better soon, poor guy!

My 13 yr old recently had a bug, she was puky and tired for a day, went to school the next, but didn't feel great, then the 3rd day, went to school, but had to be picked up early. No more puking, but just not feeling well. It seems to be lasting more than 24 hours...keep your son hydrated (at least a tsp of water every 15 min.) and just keep an eye...I bet he'll be feeling better soon. If not in a day or two, time to call doc again!

We have a 24-hour stomach bug going around, and all three of us (me, DH, DS) got it. DH threw up 3 or 4 times over a 36 hour period (not 24) and was nauseous to lessening degrees over the course of the rest of the week.
So, just because they say 24 hours, doesn't mean that everyone's over it in that period, just that most people are.

I would have definitely picked him up from school too, but would probably bring him home and watch him. If he starts vomiting or running off to the bathroom a lot, then back to the doctor I would go or at least call first and see what they say. I think sometimes it is possible to still feel crummy, but be over the worst part of the virus. And who doesn't love a little more mommy time?? I don't have school-agers yet so that is probably easier for me to say! :-)
Hope he feels better soon!

Hi cheryl-
Hugs to your kiddo!
I am the type of person that will do ANYTHING to avoid throwing up! Never had morning sickness...cause IF I did, I would only have had one kiddo.
Anyway...years ago I got a stomach virus...a nasty one. Not only puking...but for days after my stomach hurt from the muscles used throwing up....plus that 'empty' hungry pain from 'I want to eat...but am afraid I will throw it up' pain.
I would force fluids...(pops...gatorade...soups - you know the drill) and love on him.
Keep track of temp (or lack of) and give a call to docs office to keep them posted.
Best Luck!

"Nicky was home from school sick on Tuesday and Wednesday." Makes me laugh a little, our daughter stayed home last Tuesday and Wednesday as well. Thursday morning, no fever but she still didn't look 100% like you say. I asked how she felt and she said "I think I'm still sick, can you turn on SpongeBob...?"
BWAH.. She, like your son may be missing moms attention. Heck, I would to if I had two days of undivided attention. Just my two cents. Hope your day is good.

If he isn't one to get "mommyitis" then do exactly what you did and pick him up and put him to bed when he gets home. Maybe he wasn't ready for school. When we were down with a stomach bug over Christmas Break a couple of years ago, no way were any of us in condition to go to work/school for the better part of a week. It hit us hard. I'd just let him rest and eat lightly today and see how he feels tomorrow. If it gets worse, call the doctor back or if the pain is severe, take him to the ER.

We had the bug in our house a couple of weeks ago too. While the fever and "grossness" went away after 2 or 3 days, both my husband and son were "wiped out" for a good 5 days. Think about it... just because the fever is gone doesn't mean the aches and pains are gone. He's probably also really tired and worn down.
No need to go to the doctore. You're not missing anything. He just has the flu. I would let him lay low today and maybe even tomorrow so that he's ready to go on Monday. No "activities" this weekend either if you can avoid them!
Hope he feels better.

I have always, always maintained that it is definitely *unfair* for a child to be genuinely ill but not to have a temperature!
Since your son is tired and looks sick, and since the school is concerned, I'd keep him at home for the day. A child has to be relatively healthy to learn. I might call the doctor; I wouldn't take him in automatically. A 24-hour bug sometimes takes longer than 24 hours.
I used to tell my children that if they weren't well enough to go to school, they were sick enough to stay in bed (that helped with some of their "let's take a play day" thoughts); however, that wouldn't mean we wouldn't read a book or two together. ;^)

So both me and son had the stomach flu last week...son had same problem as your son...Dr. said that due to so much vomiting and diahreah that son could not handle dairy products for 7-10 days while the lining of the stomach recovered. So she had us take a probiotic and stay off dairy for a week. That has done the trick.

My GD had the exact same thing about 2 weeks ago. She missed 3-1/2 days of school. No fever, no vomiting, just said her tummy hurt and she was very tired. Don't know what it was/is, but it's something!
I would just keep him home and resting. That's what I did and after 4 days, she was fine.
Good luck! Hugs to your little sick guy!

I have a FB friend who is local, our kids go to the same school. She just moved here from out of state, I have all her insurance and we text back and forth, etc. Anyhoo, I saw her post that her daughter was home sick. Then she posts later in the day they were at the ice cream shop because her throat hurt and the ice cream made it feel better. Then she was out sick the next day. She was missing a field trip and the mom felt bad for her, so she took her to Build A Bear so she wouldn't feel bad. Spent $50 on a new bear for her...REALLY??????? My kids have only missed 2 days from school EVER but they darn sure would not be out having ice cream and getting toys! I couldn't believe it. Anyway, I hope Nicky feels better soon. Sounds like he just needed some sleep. =)
