Off and on Fever

Get him back to the doctor. Hopefully, it will be nothing serious, and a new round of antibiotics will take care of the problem. My grandson suffered from "mystery" fevers and joint pain and swelling. He saw every specialist imaginable for five months until they finally decided to send him to a hematologist for a full blood work-up. The results showed nothing remarkable, but the doctor's "gut feeling" told him otherwise. A bone marrow test finally confirmed Leukemia. We lost him 16 months later. Get back to the doctor!

I have always told fever that comes and goes is a virus. It does seem a little strange the only other symptom is his knee hurting and being tired? I actually had a virus that was similar i would spike fever like that and then it would go away a few hours later. Then one to two days later it would return...maybe it is something similar and it will go away in the next few days. Let us know what the Dr says!

He's still sick... a fever is an indication of an infection or a secondary infection/illness.
Strep is not something to fool around with...
take him in for a follow-up... make sure to tell them about his knee pain... sometimes illness can cause reactive joint pain...

Did the Doc give him medication for his Strep? Or did they just give nothing?

Instead of just calling them for an opinion... I would take him in to the Doctor.

Did your son get a course of antibiotics for the strep, *and* did he finish the course, or stop taking it once his symptoms went away?

Taking, but not completing, a course of antibiotics *can* lead to more / worse infections: if so, let your MD know this info as well.

My 14 yr old step son had a similar problem off and on for the past year. He would get a fever and his knee would swell up and he'd have severe pain in it. After several tests over the past year, the doctors finally concluded he has juvenile rheumatoid arthritis in his knee as a result of an old strep throat infection that did not get treated or that did not go away after a course of antibiotics. So, you may want to look into that when you talk to the doctor. My step-son's doctors right now are having him take high doses of ibuprophen as needed when the pain & swelling occur. He also has to have his eyes examined twice a year because of the type of rheumatoid arthritis he has can cause vision loss. Hopefully you and the doctors have caught this early enough, if that is what is wrong with your son, and he can avoid the long-term damage. :) I'll pray for you and your son!

I would definitely call the doctor. You just never know and something like joint pain would make me nervous, especially such a specific localized pain like that plus the fever. Could be nothing, but I would find out for sure. Maybe the strep didn't completely clear up or he may be fighting off a virus too. I think your doctor's office would know best.

It's possible he has mono. People usually test positive for strep when they have mono and certain forms can cause aching. Good luck...hope he feels better soon!

Chances are it is still the strep. We had to take my daughter to the ER once when out of the blue she started saying her feet hurt. They kept getting worse to the point she could not walk and carrying her with her feet dangling against us would make her cry out in pain. They tested her for different things and it ended up being strep. Strep does not always settle in the throat. It also settles in joints. After a week of antibiotics, she was fine. I would definately have your son checked out by his doctor, but I feel like they are going to get him back on antibiotics and he will be fine in a few days.
