Hi Moms,

I need to bring in a snack for my son's birthday this Friday. The school is nut free, so I need to be careful of what I bring. I'm looking for some healthy, nut free snacks that I know will be a sure hit with the kids.

Thanks!

M.

Fruit bowls are good but I'd stay away from Pineapple because many kids are allergic to that also. Also if no one has an issue with marshmellows make some rice crispy treats. Animal Crackers are good also.,

hi -
you need to be very careful because many foods are also manufactured in a plant with nuts. some thoughts:
* jello with cool whip
* jello with cut up fruit in it
* chocolate dipped fruit pieces (e.g. ** MUST read all packages - Nestle products are manufactured with nuts. You can melt silver wrapped hershey kisses- they are nut free)

other healthy ideas:

ps do not buy any bakery products from Costco (all are manufactured in a plant with nuts)

good luck

We write a blog that has recipes for mini muffins, cookies and cupcakes that are all nut-free (and also free of other allergens). The address is www.welcomingkitchen.blogspot.com

I made a fruit pizza for my daughter's birthday at school.

Roll out sugar cookie into a circle and bake the night before (I used the sugar cookie dough that came in a tube). You might need two tubes depending on class size (Mine was 10 kids and 2 teachers and the kids were able to have 1 1/2 pieces and I used one roll).

The next day spread a mixture of cream cheese, cool whip (thawed) and powdered sugar over the top. I used beaters to make it really creamy. THen I topped in with strawberries, blueberries and kiwis.

Yes, not the healthiest thing in the world but super fun to eat and at least they got some fresh fruit from it.

not really healthy, but I just did rice crispy treats with the confetti rice crispies, but I put them in a cupcake pan. I topped it with a little white frosting and a strawberry. The kids all loved it because it looked like a cupcake, but it wasn't.

I took the little individual cups of icecream for the kids and they loved them and it was easy on the teachers also since they did not have to cut anything out to serve.

Other alternatives are
1) Popsicles
2) Cup cakes
3) Individual apple sauce cups
4)Cheese and crackers
5) Pudding cups

Jello cups.
Pudding cups
Fruit roll-ups/fruit leather
rice crackers
String cheese
fruit... but yes, no pineapple.
veggies with dip (ha, probably kids won't eat it).
Jelly roll cakes
Banana bread without nuts... or made into muffin sizes
lady finger cookies
Scones
Popcorn... and put into little baggies
Madeleines

*And still, read the label, just in case.

good luck,

Okay, not exactly healthy....but cute and yummy! (be sure to check the ingredients on each item's package for nuts or processed on equipment nuts might come in to contact with)

PS - my son's (4th) birthday is Friday too! :)

DIRT DESSERT

1 lg. pkg. Oreo cookies
1 (12 oz.) container Cool Whip
8 oz. cream cheese, softened
1 c. powdered sugar
1 stick butter, softened
2 c. milk
3 oz. box of French vanilla pudding
1 tsp. vanilla

Crush Oreos and set aside. Use a mixer to blend Cool Whip, cream cheese, powdered sugar, and butter. In a bowl, combine pudding, milk, and vanilla. Beat this mixture until it's the consistency of pudding. Combine both mixtures. Layer cookies and pudding mixture, starting and ending with cookies. Refrigerate.
Put in a flower pot and serve with a shovel. Decorate with plastic flowers or put in a flower tray (23 x 6 x 6) or 11 x 17 inch pan. Gummy worms may be placed on top.

You can also do variations of this - golden oreos could be used (sand cake/dessert) and you could make a "beach party" theme - use gummy fish instead, etc.

Rice crispy treats are always a treat for my grandson. He is allergic to all tree nuts. He never gets the treats other kids bring in. So when someone brings a rice crispy treat its a really big deal.
