Last night I developed flu like symptoms (body ache, EXTREME chills--so bad it was painful, sore breast). This has happened once before. Both times it lasted for a few hours then resolved. Has anyone else had a simliar experience? Is it a blocked duct or extreme exhaustion? Just curious and looking for an explanation. Thanks!

What can I do next?

Sounds like mastitis except I'm surprised to hear you say that when it has happened before, it resolved itself. Have you changed your routine at all? I had mastitis a few times and it presented like the flu. The medication definitely helped bring relief and of course, prevention is the best medicine!

Sounds like Mastitis! I had it too- go to the OB-GYN right away and get antibiotics before it gets worse. Most importantly, as painful as it is, you have to keep nursing/pumping from the infected breast. If you don't get it resolved it could get much worse, I don't mean to scare you- but I've heard of moms having to go to the hospital for this, Mastitis is serious.

That happened to me when I was in the early days of nursing my 2nd child and it was crazy! I was under 2 blankets and shivering so bad that my teeth were chattering. It was horrible!

I was engorged at that moment (painfully so) and my sister recommended that I pump to relieve the pressure. I pumped 6 ounces that day from one side! CRAZY! So maybe that's what brought on the body aches and chills? As soon as I started pumping, I immediately felt better. It was crazy. I'm not sure whether that's what you're experiencing but it sounded similar.

Hope you're feeling better today!!!

Sounds like the onset of mastitis, but I've never heard of a case of mastitis only lasting a couple of hours. It's usually a couple of days. You don't necessarily need antibiotics, but if it lasts long enough, you might. When I got it on Day 7, my midwife told me to take Belladonna for the fever and calendula for the actual infection, and all symptoms were gone in under 48 hours. Talk to your doctor or midwife for sure.

It happened to me with my 3rd. It was a blocked duct. I also had a fever, severe chills and aches. I thought I had the flu! I relieved the pressure (was wearing a too-tight nursing bra which I later realized). Took some motrin, nursed a lot and slept and was better. Left untreated, it was going to turn into mastitis.

OMG that happened to me when I was nursing. It felt just like the flu! I assumed that's what it was so I just kept plugging along, not holding my daughter, washing before I nursed her and wishing my skin would stop aching. It lasted 2-3 days. I think my daughter had been home from the hospital about 1.5-2 weeks. I wonder if it's the same thing?

The same thing would happen to me when I was nursing. It never developed into full mastitis for me as long as I stayed hydrated, well rested (as much as you can with an infant) and nursed a lot. Often I could feel the clogged duct, but my son was always able to unclog it with frequent nursing.

Sounds like classic symptoms to mastitis. But it's odd that it has resolved on its own. I would call the doc in the morning (or if you develop symptoms again, or a fever, consider going to the ER). I had mastitis with 2 of my 3 kids and it's not something you want to play around with. So even if you feel fine in the morning, call your doctor and tell him your symptoms.

It does sound like the onset of mastitis. Remember, we are not medical professionals, and it has been MANY years since I nursed my kiddos, but I remember one time that really felt like the flu.... it happened at my in-laws, and they felt they needed to keep the baby away from me, which made my breasts worse... I ended up calling my doctor, describing the symptoms, and he agreed that it was mastitis... fever, rock-hard breasts, achy all over... the doctor ended up calling in an antibiotic for me (we were 8 hours away from my doctor).

Other times, if I caught it early, I could get rid of it by making sure I emptied my breasts after the baby was finished nursing, so things didn't get clogged up... also, a hot shower helped me get rid of some of the milk... hand expressing under the shower helped... massaging that ductal area down toward the nipple while the child was nursing... things like that always helped. (That was mostly before the onset of a fever, though... it seemed like I produced so much milk that the babies never took it all, and I could easily end up with a clogged milk duct.)

This happened to me once when my child was a newborn. I developed body aches and extreme extreme chills. My whole body was shaking uncontrolably. It lasted a short time and never happened again. I never knew what it was. My newborn was nursing a ton that day, so I chalked it up to just being so drained and sleep deprived.

Good luck. I hope it passes!
