ok this is my first time asking a question here. my lil one is 3 weeks old and I am feeling symptoms that I did not feel after I had my last 2. I am running a low grade that keeps climbing and I feel aweful. My body aches and I feel like pins and needles in my breast. my head is also hurting. I have yet to call the doc and wonder if I should. I could use any suggestions on what to do, cause I am miserable. I am breastfeeding and this is the first time I have ever breast feed so I dont know if this is normal. I am also having chills and go from hot sweats to cold sweats all day.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for your thoughts and ideas, I called the doc last night cause my fever hit 101.9 he called in an antibiotic and said it should take effect pretty soon after I start taking it, and to continue nursing and pumping other wise it can get worse. And said that after I start taking the meds it should go away with in 24-48 hours. Thanks to all the mamas who helped me.

See a doctor. It sounds like you have an infection somewhere. Good luck and congratulations on the little one.

You are describing mastitis (breast infection) to a T.

Keep nursing, see your doc, and make sure to work with a lactation specialist if you feel you are not going to make it breastfeeding. You may need antibiotics, but you'll get through it.

you should call your doctor - sounds like the beginning of 'milk' fever - and can end up being quite painful -

Sounds like you might have some sort of infection or the flu...I would call or go see a DR. Just to be safe!

Definitely call your doctor so you can find out for sure and take care of it.

I agree with Heidi. I never experience mastitis, but that sounds textbook to me. You should call your doctor NOW and go to the ER if they tell you to.

I agree with Heidi. I never experienced mastitis, but that sounds textbook to me. You should call your doctor NOW and they will probably tell you to go to the ER...do what they say. Try to keep nursing through it. It will keep your supply up and help clear any clogged ducts you may have.

Sounds like what I had which started out as some clogged milk ducts then developed into mastitis. It felt like I had the horrible flu, it was pretty awful-aches, pains, fever, chills and very sensitive breasts. Call your OB to let them know.

You could have a blocked milk duct. I had flu like symptoms. It could clear up on its own by more frequent nursing, warm compresses, lots of fluids and rest (ha!). Or you may need antibiotics to clear it up. I would probably contact your doctor. You don't want the infection to become worse, if that is the case.

The La Leche League is a GREAT resource for nursing moms and I highly recommend going to a peer to peer meeting at least once. Find a meeting in your area here http://www.lllusa.org/web/SanAntonioTX.html

Congratulations and Good Luck!

I'm glad you called the physician and got an antibiotic.

Few, if any of us, are medically trained here, and while we can usually speak to our own experiences, none of us can diagnose. I always advise in favor of calling your doctor and asking their opinion.

Sometimes, they get it wrong, too. So, if the antibiotics don't work in about 3 days, please call your OB back and ask to be seen for an exam. Our bodies go through hell during pregnancy, delivery and postpartum. I had strange things going on after my 2nd child's birth that everyone dismissed as postpartum hormones. Thank God my instincts kicked in because it was much more serious.

Good luck - I hope you are well soon and enjoying your baby.
