I have never written a note for a child I had to pick up at school for being sick. It's already on record why the child went home.
The school district my daughter attends marks kids absent for the day if they are not there at 10:00 am. I sent my daughter to school today and picked her up at 8:25 am because she got sick (didn't act sick at all for the remainder of the day). The school contacted me. The school auto-calls parents at the end of school to let them know of an absence and asks that a note be sent with the reason for the absence. I plan on writing one anyways but my questions is - in this situation would a note really be necessary? Just a "Hmmm didn't think about that one at the time" question.
Note has been written and signed. She was never running a fever so back to school tomorrow she goes because as long as she doesn't vomit overnight by the time school starts tomorrow it will be 24 hours. I am definitely doing the CYA thing just wanted to know how other moms felt and glad that most agree that it probably wasn't necessary but better cover all the bases.

Even if the school nurse sent her home, I would also follow up with a school note explaining what went on. No harm in a follow up note plus it's covers you as far as the " rules". It's not that hard just do it and be in complete compliance with all the attendance rules.
Good luck
A note is not necessary. (don't get me started about the incompetence that exists in the school offices) Write a note to cover yourself.
I would think since the school sent her home sick you wouldn't need to provide a note. It's not like she didn't go at all. They know why she wasn't there.
On the other hand, it takes two seconds to write the note, so I'd go ahead and do it.
This is a CYA thing.
Write as note:
My daughter was absent from school 2-07-12 because the school nurse called me and told me my daughter was sick, so I picked her up from school as requested by the school. Following the 24 hours of no fever policy, she was also out the following day 2-08-12.
THEN ... 2 years from now (or in June of this year), when you don't remember today from any other day... and you get a note from the school board saying your daughter has missed x number of days from school in the past 3 years... you will have a STACK of CYA notes to show them.
Because... Hard lesson learned by my mum... PHOTOCOPY, TAKE A PICTURE, OR SCAN each and every single note you send into school.
It's a "duh" moment today... but in just a few months... you'll be wracking your brain trying to remember the ins and outs of every absence or tardy.
Schools don't get paid when kids are absent, so more and more, they're starting to try and fine parents to recoup that money.
_______
ADDED: Bwahahahahaha.... there's another post tonight on JUST this subject, about a VA school trying to fine 2 parents $3000 for the number of tardies over the past 2 years.
Gotta love bureau-crazy, er um, bureaucracy.
it's probably just a "it's policy, if we cater the policy to every individual situation we'd be overrun, so let's just follow policy" kind of thing. probably not a huge deal, but it's policy. so i'd do it.
I probably wouldn't think of sending one, but I guess out of an abundance of caution, perhaps? No< I wouldn't think of sending one though, since she was there.
Send one just in case. Just note in the note that you took her from school at 8:25 after she went to the nurse, sick.
SD's school's message is "your son or daughter was absent for one or more classes today." Meaning - she may have missed a class at the end of the day for a doctor's appointment.
You might also call the school and ask if they really need the note.
Since you signed her out, I doubt that a note is needed. However, it's easier to just write a note and be done with it. I suggest you're trying too hard to do the right thing. Absences are not a problem for your daughter and so whatever you do will be alright.
Hi AriaMom - It does seem a little weird, especially since she was present and the school called you. A call to the office might be sufficient for that one. Our school district auto-calls the parents at 10am to notify about an absence and we're able to call it in either on a recorded message line or into the office. I like that they call early rather than at the end of the day so I'll if my kid isnt accounted for.
Just a thought . . . My kindergardner got to school a couple of weeks ago and 20 minutes into the day the office called me to pick him because he said he felt sick. No fever but he was pale and clammy so I took him home. I realized that he probably got carsick on the bus. He was completely fine before school and completely happy the rest of the day.
Something kind of similar happened to us recently. Of course, our school has the 24 hr fever rule. Well, one day my daughter got a fever while at school (they took the temperature at the nurse's office). The next day we didn't bring her in because of the rule. Shortly after 10 AM, we get an email saying that our daughter isn't at school and how we need to explain her absence and how multiple absences and tardiness contribute to the delinquency of a minor, blah, blah, blah- and we don't even have any kind of habitual issue with tardiness or anything!
Well thankfully, the solution was simple: I called the school and they apologized and they even mentioned that their automatic notice system was messed up.
A couple weeks ago I got an automated phone call to the house, a text, and an emial---Your daughter ______ was absent today when we took roll. .
My daughter was sittign in her class when they took roll, the kid taking attendance missed her. These are seniors in high school.
It took three days for me to straighten this out. And the office called the teacher repeatedly to ask if she was in class.
In NC if a child is absent once the parent is snail mailed a notice from the school reiterating policy. They have a 6 days a semester and you fail policy. In VA it's 18 days.
I agree,, and fyi.. It is who is in the classroom at 10:00 that counts as a student in school for the day
I agree just write the note so it is on file.. And did you get a doctors note? At our schools if you take a note, they give you credit for it.
