Not Sure of This Pain...

This is my 2nd pregnancy, due in November, and it seems like I have more questions this time around than I did the 1st time! Anyway, I am 16 weeks pregnant and have been having some sharp, vaginal pains. It's almost like an electric shock that lasts for about 10 seconds, sometimes longer.

Someone else posted a question about the same type of pain a couple weeks ago, but she was much further along so I'm a little concerned I am having this so early. If I remember right, I had these pains in my 1st pregnancy, but I just attributed it to the baby moving and pushing on things. At 16 weeks, I don't think that baby's big enough to really be causing this.

I asked my doctor about it last week, and she said it's just everything stretching and moving. She also said as long as they don't last for several minutes and there is no bleeding, not to worry about it.

Has anyone else experienced this this early? Thanks!

What can I do next?

Thanks for all your posts! I feel better knowing this is "normal" in pregnancies. :)

Ditto! I had them too. About the same time as you. With my first, I had them later, with my second, I had them early on, then they went away and now, with less than 2 weeks to go... they are back! They hurt and I never found anything to make them go away.
I guess it's one of those "grin and bear it" things!

I had this pain with both of my pregnancies. It always scared me because I thought something was wrong. It felt like a sharp twingy pain in different places in my abdomen. They said it was ligment stretching. I was about where you are in your pregnancy when I felt them. If you are really concerned, ask to be seen. That is what I did and it really helped me feel more at ease to hear the heartbeat, etc. Hope this helps!

Hi Katheryn! I too am on my second child, due in November and am 17 weeks. I too am experiencing the same pain!! I was just at the doctor last Friday and she assured me it was normal, and said that if I'm ever concerned to just call and come in. Hope this makes you feel better! Feel free to email me with other questions (since we are SO close in our pregnancies) :) ____@____.com

Hi there. Im on my second child as well. Yes i'v had those kinds of pains with both children. More so in my later months. (im due pretty soon) But yeah i did hv sharp pains in the begining as well. The dr said the same thing to me. That is was the uterus expanding and the baby growing that it was normal. Maybe it'll make u feel at easy that other hv to and was fine with first and this one is showing a very healty baby to come soon. But if u get anything eles with the pains then i would then be concerned and get in ur dr. asap. Goodluck and enjoy this time of ur life:D
takecare,
R.

it's normal, just remember with #2 you get bigger faster and feel things easier and faster than with the 1st.

Hi Katheryn!

I had piercing, sharp vaginal pains from about 15/16 weeks until I delivered!

My doctor told me it was from how the baby was lying. The baby lays horizontally until about 24 weeks, when he/she is too big and must turn vertically. My doctor said the baby lying horizontally can cause those pains, and they should go away around 24-26 weeks.

However, mine never went away. I had absolutely no other pregnancy complications and gave birth to a healthy boy. I chalked the pain up to my retail job (40 hours on my feet, doing floor sets, window changes, etc).

I know it hurts like an SOB! Relaxing and moving slowly helped me manage and deal with it. Good luck!
