Not So Good 12 Month Check Up.....

So on Monday, I brought my daughter to her 12 month appointment for her check up and some shots. Everything was going fine and the FNP said my daughter is super healthy :) Of course she had to have some shots which usually goes alright and we had to get her blood tested for lead, no biggie. The nurse administering the shots came in and decided to do the toe prick first because babies tend to do the worst with that (so why start with that?), I knew my daughter would be fine with it. The nurse pricked her toe and realized she didnt have everything that she needed so had to go get that. When it was time for the shots, she litterally went back and forth across the office to get what she needed (clean leg, go across room, grab needle give shot, back across room, gauze to clean leg, back across room, bandaid, back again- every time), and she didnt even bring enough bandaids. She was so unorganized. Any other time I had gone there the nurse would have everything she needed right beside her on the table on wheels. ALSO during the 2nd and 3rd shots, she started squeezing the needle before it even when in her leg! So there was vaccine liquid stuff all over her leg. She didnt tell me which one was which when I asked her either. I got home and put the baby to bed then called the office and talked to the person in charge. I explained that I was not satisfied with how unorganized this woman was and it turns out she was filling in for a regular nurse. Ok fine but I think she still should have had everything prepared. I expressed how concerned I was that my daughter might not have gotten enough of the vaccines. The woman said she would find out what was going on. When she called me back it sounded like she was making excuses for the nurse! She said this woman has been a pediatric nurse for 15 plus years. again, that only further convinced me that she should have been prepared. Then the woman also said that sometimes when filling the shots some of the vaccine can be left in the needle itself, so whatever got on her leg was basically "extra that was in the needle" which I did not think that so much liquid could fit in a small needle. The woman said she got enough of the vaccines and not to worry about it, but it just doesnt make sense to me. Im still pretty pissed about it, and since she is a fill in nurse I dont have to see her again. Has anyone else gone through this and does anyone know anything about the "liquid in the needle" excuse? I just want to be sure, I dont know what I am supposed to do if she didnt get enough........ AAAAHHHHHHHH

What can I do next?

I would make another appt and talk to the pediatrician about it. If a nurse called you back and talked to you about another nurse, it could be them trying not to get introuble. I would just double check with the DOCTOR..not another nurse. how do you know the person answering the phone wasnt the fill in nurse taking care of your daughter that day?

Take a deep breath, breathe in and out then laugh! Most of these vaccines are for things that are not really around anymore thanks to the vaccines and the few that could still effect her today I am sure she is well protected against vaccine or not just by reading your post.
No, I have not had an appointment go like this, but personally I would have stopped it an asked for someone else once I saw a difference in the routine, yeah I am controlling like that I know. And now YOU know what to look for next round of shots if someone is anywhere near like this then ask for a diff nurse to do them what are they gonna say "no?" then you can decline their services essentially say "NO" back.
But really ... I think it is ok, and that once you decide to breath and laugh it the annoyance will wash away.

I do believe the liquid in the needle to be true anything you suck up will have extra flowing out it won't be completley sucked down & some will squirt a lil out to make sure there is no kink in the needle or air bubble that will make the shot hurt a bit worse. She may be unorganized maybe an off day for her regardless the shots should of been prepared organzied & no need to go back & forth that would frustrate me but why didn't you say some thing right then & there???I would of just like @ my office there is a fill in nurse & has been for a few weeks now she had my kids get into a gown just to check ears I mentioned to the Dr she said ya not my usual nurse but will we chuckeled at it this happened twice with my 2 girls on 2 different visits...

I am not 100% sure, but if you are really worried you can have a blood test drawn to see . I know you should not have to do that, I know she should not have to go through that, but if you are really worried and do not trust what they say this will give you a deffinent answer. Not now though you would have to wait a little til her body builds up some immunity

get a second opinion, call another dr's office and ask..i'm sure if there was a real problem it would be addressed or handeled better

again, why didn't you ask the nurse right then and there?

You're a new mom, i highly doubt that this is something you need to stress or worry about, but as all mom's were once new, everything can be cause for worry.

At my daughter's 3 year old appointment, she got some shots. I was holding her hands with one hand and holding my son in the other. When the nurse gave her the first shot, my daughter ripped her hand from my grip and pushed the nurses hand! It all happened so fast! The liquid from the shot was squirting everywhere and my daughter had a scratch on her leg from pushing the needle out of it. It was awful. I don't blame the nurse, but it was a bad appointment. Anyway, all of that to say that she didn't get the full amount either, but the nurse and doctor both said it was plenty and not to worry about the vaccine that she sprayed all over the office. Ugh! I am sure your daughter got enough of the medicine. However, if you aren't comfortable with that office, I would try to find another pedi. It's definitely worth your peace of mind to find the right fit! Good luck.
