Not Going to Quit My Day Job But...

The question about learning to cook got me thinking that perhaps there is a demand for people that can teach people how to cook. Cooking to me is no different than walking or talking, I was raised to cook. I can remember back at three years old grandma saying taste, what do you think?

So I guess I am wondering why there aren't people out there that will take you into their kitchen and teach you how to cook? Seems like there would be a demand for that.

I would do it but lord I am too busy cooking and too lazy to clean my house.

Really anyone who doesn't mind a mess is welcome to my kitchen if they are in town. :)

Oh the mess is in the rest of the house, the kitchen is clean. :)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Oh if you knew my ADD you would understand why at their house would not work for me. I would be on the phone with Troy going bring this or that. Great idea mind you, for a normal person. :)

Oh, I could make a check list....hum

Kati I will actually be up there in July but my daughter will most likely not give me much free time. :(

If I lived close I would love to have you teach me! I am a terrible cook and I do not enjoy it, but I want to learn and I want to learn to love it. I am moving into a new house and I want to learn to utilize my kitchen better. I need to learn to cook for my kids instead of giving them mac-n-cheese and hotdogs.
So I would use you but I would want you to give me a list and come to my house!
Anyone in KC want to help me?

I love to cook as well. I run a small catering and cake decorating business out of my home. Our neighbors are Indian. They teach me how to cook some of their delicious dishes and I have helped them become better bakers. It's been a fun trade!

We have several places around here that offer to teach someone how to cook. Our local school district offers summer lessons for adults on a wide range of subjects, many of them are cooking.

Also, Williams-Sonoma offers cooking lessons.

My mother never taught me how to cook either...so when I really started getting into and realized how much I loved it, and how much more I loved baking, the natural progression for me was culinary school.

I just finished my first semester with a 4.0!

If I lived by you I would come for a lesson and if the house is messy, YAY I would feel much more at home! I know how to cook but would love to learn new things and an at home setting would be fun! I love to cook, I was never really taught I just kinda taught myself! Being recently laid off I was thinking of things to do to make a little milk money, one of my ideas was to make good nutritious dinners and deliver them to friends who have late nights due to sports ect and this way they get good meal cheaper than a restrauant!I

I think its a great idea and if I had some extra fun money floating around something I would look into.

My grandmother was an excellent cook, but did not like the 20+ some odd grandchildren she had around on any given weekend underfoot in her kitchen so I never learned how to bake her fabulous bread or make her amazing marinara sauce or soups just to name a few. She died when I was 18 and my whole pregnancy many years later i endured unsatisfied cravings for some of her dishes...nothing else compared so I did not even bother.

My mother 'cooked' everything from a box or a can. Only one holidays would we have 'real' mashed potatoes instead of those dried nasty flakes.

Personally, I try to cook from scratch as much as possible but never learned how to make a great sauce for example. Again, great idea, if you could teach me sauces more power to you :-)

Or what about offering a lesson in THEIR kitchen? You bring the supplies and they provide the kitchen - like they do on TV? Maybe offer "Learn to cook a romantic dinner" or "Brunch for someone special" or "Kiddie favorites" or "Dinner in 30" and price according to meal type and travel time for you.

ETA: Or make a list that THEY need to provide before the lesson. Just an idea.

I was raised by a single mom in the 70's. She rarely cooked for us and was so excited when tv dinners were invented! Me, not so much... She made spaghetti, rubbery steaks and pork chops with canned veggies. Honestly, that was about it. My grandma was a better cook but I only saw her on holidays so I didn't really learn from her either. I would like to learn if there was someone available to learn from. But I would just want to learn the basics, not "weird" recipes with crazy gourmet ingredients. I am trying to do better now. I've been collecting some recipes that I think are easy enough for me to do and have been trying them out on the family. So far they have liked everything but I think the hardest thing about it is planning it out and getting organized. =)

There is a need for this but you might have to contact your local community college or high school to see if they are willing to be the host of such a program.

Also the presentation of the food and the setting of the table with the correct table linens and plates is another good one. I had to set the table each night and we had to put everything in its proper place or we heard about it from my aunt. I am now glad that I learned how to do this.

I went to take care of my son about three weeks back for the week and he requested homemade split pea soup. His wife was out of town for training and he is recovering for an automobile accident where both of legs were broken and is now learning to walk again.

Good luck to you all.
