I gave birth to my son 3 months ago. I still havent gotten my period. At my six weeks appt. dr said since I am nursing he cant say when it will come. I am nursing a little bit still but thought it would come by now. I just dont know if this is normal or if I should go get a pregnancy test. With my son, my pregnancy was so different then it was with my girls and with them I got it right away. How long after you gave birth did you get your period??

What can I do next?

It really varies woman to woman. Some references state as long as you are nursing 100% you will not get your period... but this isn't necessarily true. If you THINK pregnancy might be a possibility, I would purchase a home pregnancy test. If not, your body may still just be adjusting and since you are nursing/supplementing it could be a few more months. You might also want to check with your ob/gyn for any other concerns.

I nursed my son until he was 29 months and I got my period back at about 14 months. Most women who nearly/completely nurse for the 6 months as is recommended usually go at least 6 months, if not more.

I have a son that is almost 10 months old and still no period. He is EBF and eating solids but I still pump while I am at work and have so much milk in my deep freeze have no idea what to do with it. With my DD I think it came back around month 5-6 but I was at home and not pumping and had to suplement with formula, but with both I went on the pill at my 6 weeks check-up so I am not worried and have not even thought that I could be pregnant.
If it will make you feel better go spend the $10.

Hope this helps.

I didn't get mine until my son was 16 months old and at that point he had cut back his nursing to 2x/day for about 3 months. You will probably be able to tell when your fertility is threatening to come back because you'll see more and wetter cervical fluid when you ovulate.

I would not bother with a pregnancy test. Enjoy not having a period for a while!

Hi L.,

That is pretty normal for me. With all 3 of my kids, if I was nursing just a little, I did not get my monthly till I was completely done. Matter of fact, for my latest one...I did not get my monthly till she became 12mo old and I stopped nursing when she was 7mo.

I too was nervous of being pregnant again and did take the test. Whew...I was negative and the Dr's said it was normal. So to put your heart at ease you could certainly take a test.

Hope this helps somewhat.

Thanks,
C.
