My son is almost 19 months old and has always been a really great sleeper. He still sleep 12 hours straight every night but or the past week and 1/2 or so, he no longer wants to take a nap. He will act sleepy, rub his eyes and ask for his teddy like he has alwsy done and does at bed time but after laying down for about 5 minutes he is ready to get up.
I was just wondering if he is weaning him self off of naps all together or if this is just maybe a phase or something. There have been no changes in his life to promt this.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I wanted to say thank you to everyone who took the time to share ideas and advice. Today right at noon (like he always used to) he went right to sleep and slept for 2 hours. I guess he decided he was ready to nap again. :) Hpefully he keeps it up.

C.,

One of my children gave up naps entirely and only slept for eight hours a night--by his first birthday!!

I would definitely do the quiet-rest time like the other mother's suggested. If he naps, he naps. If he doesn't, he doesn't. Even if he does not go back to napping, it sounds like he still needs rest time.

You could also get him up a little earlier or keep him up a little later (shorten his nightime sleep) and he may start napping again.

Hi C., I know how distressing this no nap thing is ;-) My daughter went through this and for her it was a phase. She was slightly younger and it lasted a couple of weeks. She has gone back to napping although it is now later in the day and for a shorter amount of time. (45 min - 1 1/2 hours). She also has a very hard time with any time changes (daylight savings) her sleep patterns are affected for at least 2 weeks. My friend's son however quit napping right around your son's age and rarely naps now. He does sleep later in the morning however. Good Luck!

I remember my son doing this at about that age. It really just seemed like he didn't need sleep to feel re-energized, but rather just needed some relaxing, cool-down time. Eventually, he did start napping again, though. :)

Hi, C.!
Try to move his nap time later. When my kids were in the same period "no nap time", we were playing a game "nap time for everybody", we were laying down on my bed or sofa, turn on a bed time music, when kids fall a sleep i just put them in there beds. Also if kids will go outside for 1-2 hours in the morning, they are definately will have a nap.
Best wishes,
V..

maybe naptime needs to be moved?

I would try & 'keep' the nap for as long as possible :-)

just call it 'rest time' or 'quiet time' and do everything you would, like for a nap...soon he'll be napping again :)

Hi, if you can try to introduced quiet times. I have a gate across my daughters door, more for safety, however it inforces a quiet time nap or just time in bed. In preschool and kindegarden the kids are all going to take naps or quiet times. Good luck!
