My husband did not have a "follow-up" but had to bring a specimen in one week later. And another one a week after that, just to verify that it took!
My hubby went to a dr. yesterday for a consultation on a vasectomy. He said they told him there is no follow up visit to make sure it took. Does this sound right? I remember my ob/gyn told me that I need to keep taking my pills until his dr. confirms that all is good after the snip-snip. Did he just go to the wrong dr? Or have y'all heard the same thing?
Turns out my hubby doesn't ask very many questions...I think he didn't ask anything after "how much does it cost?"! I called the dr. office and spoke with the nurse. He will have the testing done afterwards, but they don't actually schedule another office visit unless something is wrong. I guess that's what I get for not going with him and asking my own questions...never leave the important stuff up to a man! :) Thanks for all the responses, because it sure didn't sound right to me either!

My husband had a vasectomy 3 mnths ago. He was tested last week and still is not sterile. You definately have to be tested!
oh no, there should be at least 2 or 3 follow up visits. He should have to take in samples to be tested. If not, then he should find another doctor. I know my husband had to go back more than once. I recommend Dr Hey in downtown Ft Worth. He is one of the best.
My hubby had the procedure about 12 yrs ago. There was no follow with the surgeon, however, he did have to provide samples to the hospital for about 4 months, or until you get the ALL CLEAR.
I was still so scared that it did not work that I stayed on the pill until my hysterectomy 8 yrs ago. (BEST move I ever made!!!)
We knew we were done and did not want an oopsie. That's why I double dipped with the pill and his snip for about 4 yrs. I certainly have no worries now.
Good luck.
My husband was supposed to take a sample to the lab 6 weeks after to make sure all was good.
My husbands doctor had two follow-up appointments to make sure everything went according to plan. It has been three years and no problems. We used the Mens Health Center - Dr. Weinberg (sp?). I believe he has an office in Lewisville and in Dallas.
yes, we had a follow up with the doctor we used. Why wouldn't you? Find a new doctor
my hubby went through it a couple years ago. he only had to go back once to check the count and we got the all clear. i would definitely find a doc that expects to check for you 4 - 6 weeks after the fact. if for no other reason than your own peace of mind.
uummm, no. I would be finding a different doctor. He really needs to see a urologist to get the care that he needs. It is just safer as they specilize in these things. Good luck.

My husband just had a vasectomy and there WAS a follow-up. Everyone I know who has had one had a follow-up...and 2 of our friends didn't take so at the follow-up, they had to schedule ANOTHER vasectomy! You're gonna need that follow-up!
I'd double check that because I know of someone that didn't go for his follow-up and they ended up with #3(for them/#4 for him).
My husband's doctor made sure he was clear...he had one follow up after one month. I'd definitely find someone who checked.
My husband just got a vasectomy a week or so ago, and it's a long story, but he actually had initial consultations with 2 different doctors first (because one was going to have to schedule his vasectomy way out). Both of them said he would have to take a sample to be tested after a certain number of ejaculations (I know, maybe TMI), and then have a second test done again after a certain amount of time. In fact, I read in his paper work that they also suggest you have it tested every year or so to make sure it has not grown back. Also, my sister's husband got a vasectomy and his doctor told him the same thing.
So I would suggest he try another doctor, honestly. Just my 2 cents.
Hey S.,
My husband had a vasectomy and he had a return visit. He did not see the Dr., but had to bring a sample in to make sure that his vasectomy took.
My hubby went for his consultation today. The Dr does expect him to come back for a check up.
my husband had his 18 months ago. he was told to go back to be sure it took and for me to stay on bc until them......he never went back, but....i stayed on bc for about 4 months after and no pg. I'd get another opinion. Even if he winds up not going for the re-check they should still be advising it!
My hubby did NOT have a follow up appt, but he DID get a vial in which he was supposed to drop off a specimen. Then the specimen would go to a lab to see if the procedure took, and if it did not, he was to provide another specimen later on. THEN if it still didn't take, he would make another office appt.
That works for us --- we just need confirmation, we don't need hubby to make an appt for the confirmation part.
My husband had a vasectomy seven years ago, and he had to go back twice for check-up, and bring "samples" to make sure that he was "clear". If your husband's doctor doesn't do check-ups, I would find a different doctor. It's better so be safe, than sorry! Good luck.
we had a check up and 2 "donations" to give, before we were given the all clear.
I don't think this is normal. After my husband's vasectomy (about 10 years ago), he had to go back and do his "business" in a cup for them to check.
there's usually a week later follow up to see if the area is healed properly. then there's one a month or so later to see if the "soldiers" are unfunctional. my husband did the week later follow up but not the last... and this was seven years ago. no surprises!:)
My husband had a vasectomy about 6 weeks ago and all they told us was that he needed to bring in samples at 6 weeks and 6 months just to make sure. Did they not tell him to bring in samples? I would call and make sure he gets tested to make sure it worked!!!
I know you got the right info but I do want to reinforce to KEEP taking your pills and MAKE YOUR HUSBAND GO BACK FOR THE CHECKUP! My good friend got pregnant 9 months after her husband had the vasectomy. He was too embarrassed to go back and give a sample! Most doctors allow you to do the sample at home and just bring it in so you might want to ask that if your husband has concerns. Dr. Kaplan at Medical City is great in case you aer looking for another doctor.
My husband had his done in June and did not have a follow up unless there was complications. The doctor did tell him that after 25 ejaculations to bring in a sample to make sure it is clear.
My husband has his procedure in March and they didn't schedule a follow-up, just gave him a vial for a specimen sample. He had some complications though. They talked to him on the phone, but after a few weeks, they finally saw him. He's still got to take another specimen, as he was not "clear" after 6 months.
My friend's husband blew the follow up visit off and they now have baby #3. I think she did say that they were supposed to wait a period of time to be sure. I think I would want to know for sure before an accident occurs. You can always dbl check with your family doctor for their opinion.
doesn't sound right. my DH had to go twice - once at 6 weeks post-procedure and again at 8 weeks.
I have a friend whose husband did the follow-up and they still had a 3rd child....at which point she had her tubes tied. They view the situation as God's plan.
Doesn't sound right to me. My husband did go back for a check up after his vasectomy. They did test to see if it "took".
I would go to a different Urologist. My husband had one a few yrs back and he had to go back 3 times with a sample to be tested to make sure it took.
That doesn't sound correct to me. My husband just had one and has to go back to see the doctor to ensure that it worked. Yes, take your pills. I have heard of stories where husbands didn't go back and a vasectomy baby was born. Also, some times the tubes or whatever they are called can grow back as well. I don't know, that just does not seem right.
when my husband went they told him he had to give 2 samples with in 6 weeks to make shure. they even sent a letter reminding him to do so. good luck =)
We are considering the same procedure. My brother had it done and has to go back to give a "sample". I think that is pretty standard. Personally, if our doc says he doesn't have to come back to give a sample we will find a new one because we REALLY do not want anymore children.
