I think I started the NCSS with my daughter when she was 3 or 4 mos. old. She was a terrible napper and sleeper, and that book saved our lives. My kid went from being a lousy sleeper to being incredibly easy to put to bed at night. Even the occasional baby sitter commented on how gentle and perfect our nighttime routine was. Basically, you keep logs on how your child sleeps and naps and then you try some of the techniques and see how they work.

It may not work for you--I have friends who hated the NCSS, but for me, it was a miracle book. Plain and simple.

The author is Elizabeth Pantley and she has 2 books, one for babies and one for toddlers. Both are excellent and since she understands that there is no cookie-cutter, one-size-fits all solution, she presents a variety of different methods so can can find something that will work for you and your family. Good luck, and remember that this time doesn't last forever.

You can start many of the techniques for babies who are less than one. There's also a No Cry Sleep Solution for toddlers. Both are really good books and I would highly recommend it. It's backed by a lot of research so I felt comfortable with it. There used to be a Yahoo group for people using the methods. You still might be able to find/join it for extra support and guidance.
