No Canines?

My daughter is about 4 months shy of her 3rd birthday and still has no canine teeth on her top or bottom. She got her first tooth when she was 14 months, so I wondered if maybe they're all just delayed? But all of her other teeth had come in by 8 months ago, and still no canines. Has anyone experienced this before?

What can I do next?

My husband is a dentist and although he says he's seen many kids with a delayed tooth or two, he says you'll never really know unless you get an x-ray and see if they are up there or not. So I guess wait it out, or get an x-ray to see if they just haven't broken through yet. It might be pretty hard to get a good x-ray with a three year old, though. Good luck!

She should be seeing the dentist by about 3 years old anyway (my dentists told the kids he needed to "count teeth"). Get an appointment and take her in for a checkup

Dear G.,

Your daughter is fine. The canines are one of the last ones to erupt. I am a dental hygienist and have seen this before. I would suggest that you look up some site to see what the eruption dates for primary teeth and permanent teeth. Then, you will be informed. Everyone is different and children sometimes get their teeth early and some later than others.

Hi G. - if you have a chiropractor you go to, they might be able to help. I've had friends who swear by them with teething issues.

Also have a talk with your dentist and see if they feel like she is old enough to handle getting x-rays. My son had his first visit to the dentist around 3 too.

Congratulations as well on your Christmas baby!

I wouldn't worry about it. It sounds like all your daughters teeth are coming in pretty late. My son is 14 mos old and he sprouted his first tooth at 5 1/2 mos old and by the time he was 8 mos old he had 7 teeth. Now at 14 mos he has 9 teeth, and the two that just broke through are the ones behind his canine (eye) teeth on the bottom, his eye teeth are not in yet. He has 3 front teeth in on the bottom and we are STILL waiting for the fourth to arrive, its been over 5 mos since the other one came in and there is still no sign on it. If you take her into the dentist you could ask about it, but most likely it not an issue and its just something that will come when its good and ready! Good luck!

PS: I am also due in Dec with our second! How exciting!

Hey G.!! =)

First time I've seen a post by someone I know!

Anyways...I'm kinda surprised her Pediatrician didn't say anything....Maybe ask them at her next appointment or call a dentist office and ask them what they think?

Hope all is well with you guys!

I would take her to the dentist so they can see if they are there. My aunt and my neice just dont have them. My aunt never had all 4 so I believe she had implants and my neice only doesnt have 1. Not sure how or why or if its genetic?

I'm a dental assistant and what I have seen is that some teeth just take a while to come in but there are cases of the teeth not being there. Or ones that are in a way "stuck" and need help coming through. you should take her to a dentist and they can take an X-ray to see what's going on.
