i have a 12 week old baby girl and she has been the best baby since birth she sleeps all night long, but for the past few days she has been having what i think are nightmares she starts to wimper and cry while she sleeps. At first i thought it was her waking up to be fed but when i check on her she is back sleeping again. Any idea what it might be?

What can I do next?

My girls did this and I finally decided it was their teeth. Despite that they were late getting in all of their teeth, they still were teething from 3-4 months on! In fact, my 2 yr. old is doing it now again as she is cutting her molars...but I bet they won't come in for atleast another month of two. If she is chewing on things a lot, it could be her teeth...I would also agree that it could be gas as well.

now, this might sound way out in left field, but have you checked to see if she might be teething? I ask this because my oldest popped her very first tooth around 12 weeks. I thought she was sick and she was a great sleeper until that time and we noticed the wimpering and crying out in her sleep. then the next thing I know she has a tooth, anyway...feel around her little mouth and see if she has a littl hardness on the upper or lower front gums...I say both because my twins teethed at the same time and one popped her tooth on the top and the other popped her first tooth on the bottom...(I think they are mirror twins...LOL) anyway, just a thought.

Love and belief,

A.

Believe it or not they do dream and can have nightmares. She could be dreaming about childbirth, something that startled her, etc...

It is ok. If she cries out for you pick her up and try to wake her up then put her back to bed.

Good Luck!

Very possibly could be gas. Try giving her a little mylicon before bed and see if it helps her. If her bowel movements havent been the best you might put Karo Syrup (dark) in her bottle. Also, take a glycerin suppository, place half way into the rectum and gently pull in and out a couple of times. It will release gas build up and stimulate a bowel movement. My doctor told me to do that for one of my kids that had colic and I thought "GROSS" but it truly was the best thing for him--worked big time. They will never know what we went through to make them comforable will they?? :-)

All of that is of course if it is a gas issue. I don't think 12 week olds have nightmares??

Good Luck

Hi there B.. Lay your mind to rest my dear. These are not nightmares, this is called Active Sleep. Babies have four modes of sleep, whereas adults have only two. They have drowsiness, quiet alert (moves while eyes closed), active sleep (asleep, but whimpers, cries, sucks, etc.) and REM (deep sleep). They can go through all four at one session, or pick and choose, although they won't get to REM without passing through one of the others first. As she grows older, she will begin to cycle through these as adults do. Hope this helped!

Are you nursing? I was nursing my son when he started having bouts of crying in the middle of the night. The short version is I switched to formula for a day after changing my diet, etc, and they subsided, so I switched completely. It ended up just being major gas pains.

I'd have her checked out by your pediatician. I've heard of people undergoing sleep studies but I'm not sure about infants. In any case let your pediatrician know.
Lots of luck,

Ditto what Candy said. The wimpering is just her making noises in her sleep.
