Night-time Diaper Leakage

Ok mamas.. hoping you can help me here. My sweet baby girl (3 &1/2 months) has learned to roll over. During the night she rolls over from her back to her tummy but often gets a little stuck on her arm so ends up partly on her side. The last 3 times she has done this (2 naps yesterday and once during the night) when she urinates it seems to come out the top. When I checked on her at 2am this morning she was in a small lake. I have tried putting her on her back once she is fully asleep but she turns right back over once I let go of her so change of position is not going to help. How do I keep her dry during nap & night time? I also use a little bit larger diaper (size 2) for night time sleep to help absorb more. I made sure it was quiet snug at the top before putting her down last night. She ended up sleeping in her swing the rest of last night because I only have 3 sheets & mattress pads!

Also my pedi told me not to worry about her rolling over in her sleep because she was rolling from tummy to back before back to tummy.

Editting: She normally wears size 1-2 pampers and I put her in the size 2 for sleep. They are quite large on her and I do use the dry max. The problem seems to be the urine comes out the top because of the position she is in. We were in Costco brand but found pampers absorbed A LOT more.

What can I do next?

since you are already using the Dry Max I will just tell you why it is the best - my daughter did a science fair project where she compared various types of diapers absorbancy and wetness feeling. Dry Max felt wet soonest but absorbed the most. It absorbed dramatically more.

And I see you also went up to a larger size for sleep.

Since neither of these seemed to work, I have a different solution. Take a women's sanitary pad and put it across the belly portion of the diaper, hopefully this will absorb the extra wetness in the area that needs it the most.

You could buy some Huggies goodnights. I think they start at size 3 or 4 though. OR, you could double up the diaper or put a pair of training pants over the diaper to absorb the leakage. You might look at different brand of diaper altogether. Some are shorter than others.

Have you tried using a different diaper? Or maybe she is ready for the next size up? My daughter used to do that, I changed brands of diapers and it helped. She is now using the Costco brand

I didn't read other posts, so sorry if this is a repeat, but we have been really happy with Huggies Overnites - little guy wears one size up and night and since then, no wet p.j.'s.

I never really had an issue with my daughter leaking at night, but my son was another story. It didn't hit me until I had to change him the first time that diapering a boy is a L. different than diapering a girl. Anyway, my son always leaked from the top like your daughter is doing, so I bought the next size up and put the diaper on so the front was high up on his stomach. That really helped although he still has leaks every once in a while. I use Luvs, which I absolutely hated with my daughter, but I love for my son. Hope this helps.

Make sure you have the diaper tight enough at her waist. The tabs should over lap eachother.

Baby's R Us sells a diaper pad in a package of 30 for like $3.50. We put one in our baby's diaper each night and he has been dry each morning. The brand is Select Kids Diaper Booster pads. Good luck. It took us a month before we were finally made aware of this product.

diapers leak if too small or too big. They sell special night diapers. I didn't have to use them with my daughter but had to for my son. They worked perfectly. They are a little more expensive, but work. I got tired of changing sheets too. I only have 2 sets. I think Huggies diapers work best at not leaking. But buy the night time ones. It is worth it.

Huggies Overnights!!!! I had the same problem as you with both my girls. The Huggies worked perfectly. Also, just try and make sure you give her a fresh diaper "right" before bedtime. A dryer diaper will also encourage her to sleep through the night, creating good sleeping habits.

At Babies R Us they sell a small package of "pads" that you put in the diaper for extra absorbtion. These "pads" are inexpensive and help a lot!! Try them out, they worked for my son. They are found in the diaper aisle.

good luck!

I have found Huggies Overnights work great for my kids. Also, I saw the post about the pads they sell at Babies R Us - I've heard of those & also heard of moms just sticking a maxi pad to the inside of the diaper.

I would use the size 2 and get a waterproof breathable cloth diaper cover to go over top of that so that if she does leak through the diaper then a least its not going all over the bedding. You are probably up with her at night anyway so you can see if she needs a diaper change then but at least you aren't changing bedding. This is probably just an in between stage that she's in and will get out of it once she grows a bit. I went through it with my oldest son and then switched to cloth diapers.

For us it was a matter of fit and brand. The only brand I found that didn't leak (and that included Pampers and Huggies) was Dri-Bottoms from Wal-mart. Of course we found this out through trial and error due to most other brands causing an allergic reaction so between the leaking and a sore bottom we finally found diapers that worked for us. I just googled the brand (since it's been 7+ years since I had a kid in diapers) and see that this bramd has been replaced by Parent's Choice. I think trial and error is how it usually goes. Try switching back to a size smaller. Back when my kids where in diapers I had a friend who used an extra absorbant disposeable liner in the diaper at bed time...no idea where she got those or what they were calle, sorry. Good luck. Hopefully you find a solution or it resolves itself for you.

When my daughters did this (it happened to all 3) I put the diapers on backward for a little while. I also used HUGE diapers. I would go up more than one size. I have also been known to put my older Childs size 6 diaper over the backward diaper so the baby is wearing two dopers. You can double up the same size diaper, one on backward one on forward, too.

Sometimes, all it takes is a switch to a different brand. If that doesn't work, then put an extra absorbent, extra long, maxi pad inside her diaper at night. Sounds really bizarre, but it totally works! LOL =0)

Huggies Overnights were the ONLY thing that worked for both of mine little ones (boy and girl). I tried Pampers Dry Max, but still got leaks. Never even one leak with Huggies Overnights! Good luck!

If you decide to not switch brands, I second the using of the pads. My son likes to sleep with his butt in the air since I can remember. During a period of time, he was leaking over the top and the bottom was always dry. I used the pad across the top for awhile. My friend laughed at me, but it worked. Time went by and then he wasn't peeing so heavily at night. Hope this helps.

Hum, I was going to suggest overnights, but I think the smallest size Huggies makes is 3. I've heard of people putting maxipads inside of the diaper at night, I can't speak to that as I never had to do it.

Hi,
We had the same problem with my son. Then we switched to using Pampers Baby Dry at night. We used the same size as the Pampers Snugglers we use during the day until he was close to outgrowing a size. Then we switched him up a size in the night diapers first. The Baby Dry worked so much better over night and for naps. And of course we made sure they were snug around his waist.
Now that he is in a size 3 we use the special overnight diapers. I forget what they are called, but we use the Huggies version of Overnight Diapers because they worked better than the pampers version in not leaking over the top.
Good luck!
