I have just started to branch out in my photography with infants and I say you can do it now, but don't go to JC Penny! Find a local photographer that will do a much better job and be way more personal!!!
I like to shoot babies under 10 days old and most baby photographers do the same! A baby can never be too new!
Don't miss out on these first days and weeks!

Congrats on the new baby!

There is a book called How to Photograph Your Baby by Nick Kelsh. It gives an easy basic primer on how to take great pictures yourself. There is an older version and a newer one for digital photography. I borrowed it from the library and was able to glean some info to enhance my pictures. I had newborn pictures done at Target and they turned out pretty good. Not as good as the ones that I had done with a pro photographer for my other child but that was a lot more expensive. I have heard good things about Portrait Innovations and am thinking about trying them next time I go for pictures.

Yes! Take him to get pictures--- I would go to sears instead of jc penny if you can. I like the props better and they were more friendly and good with the children. Or, if you know a photographer---it is way worth it to get some great mommy and baby shots and baby alone shots too for your memory book. Don't wait....get them done this week! Take care and congrats on the little one!

I would take him whenever you want. I don't see any reason why you shouldn't unless he's sick & has a weak immune system. I took my DD to Walmart a week after she was born & then to a wedding. LOL! Enjoy!

This is summer/spring. People have allergies, not so much colds. I would take him now.

Hi--
Congrats!!! You can go anytime, but I agree about the JC Penney thing, too. There's a local photographer who's great--check out precious poses (Mamapedia has had discounts to them in the past). They give you your negatives and they are fantastic with newborns.

I took my first when he was 7 weeks. But he was born in January and we lived in Ohio then- so it was FREEZING- I waited until it was a bit warmer out.

I took my second when she was 3 months. She had some health problems at birth so her first 3 months were busy busy busy with Doctors. I do regret not having newborn pictures of her, now she will be 2 in June, and I will not miss out on getting pictures then!

Take him now. :)

My SIL is a professional photographer. She only does new born photos for infants under 14 days old! She will take pics of older infants but the new born photos must be done when they are still really sleepy and still curl in the fetal position. After 14 days she feels they are too alert and not quite as "bendy"

I personally would reccomend portrait innovations before I would JC Penny.

Just remember that the little ones are most susceptible to germs etc in the first 30 days of life, soif you do take him in for photos, make sure that you have him protected, hands are washed, he's being put on clean items etc.

My 2 children have only been to JCPenneys for portraits and I love them! I don't know where the idea that they don't care is coming from. There is a photographer that has done most of our shoots and she's great! The only thing I noticed is that my kids would usually come down with a cold not long afterwards so I started washing their hands when we got done although your little one probably won't be touching the props yet. This reminds me that I need to call and schedule our session now. :)

Just bring your own blanket and go for it! I wouldn't make it an extended trip to the mall, but you could probably both use a little time out of the house. I love to take pictures and did my son's newborn shots at home, so you may want to try that out too. I have a good camera and played around with different poses and lighting using a stuffed animal and then when I figured out what I liked we did the whole thing in under 30 minutes!

Just a suggestion... call around b/c there are some very reasonable photographers who will come to your home. Avoid the Picture People if you can- great pictures but very very expensive!
