We didn't get a refer, but my daughter did have to have to have the test done again b/c she failed the first time. She was awake, and there was a little fluid since she arrived early. The second time she was asleep, and she passed.
When having the hearing screening done on your newborn did anyone get a refer instead of pass? We just left the hospital with our 2 day old baby boy and instead of pass he got refer. We are scheduled to have another test on Thursday but I would love to hear from mom's whose child got refer the first time then passed later. Thank you!

One of ours (I don't even remember which) had to redo her hearing test. It all came back fine, all the kids have excellent hearing......except when I'm telling them to clean their rooms.
Dear L.,
Congratulations on your new baby!!!
I just want to let you know that this happens quite often.
Having worked in the OB ward doing birth certificates at a hospital, many babies are referred for further screening and their hearing is found to be just fine.
We had numerous situations where the babies weren't screened at the hospital because the babies were just too fussy or the equipment didn't seem to be working correctly. The follow up was done with the pediatrician.
Working in the medical records department, I often had a chance to have contact with families after they had left the hospital if they requested copies of records. I was able to ask them how the babies were doing or better yet, get to see the babies again myself.
Fortunately, in all the cases I'm aware of, the subsequent hearing screens were passed.
I hope this will give you some peace of mind. It happens. Enjoy your precious baby and don't be too worried about this.
Best of wishes and good luck on Thursday!
Me too. My older son had this situation and he passed just fine the 2nd time (after we got home). congratulations on your new baby!
My oldest daughter had to have a retest and we were told that it is very common. Many times something can get in their ear (sounds gross) on their way down - that's how it was described to me. Being a mom it's our nature to worry so for me to tell you not to wouldn't do the trick, but maybe worry a little less knowing that our daughter's hearing was just fine. Not sure how it is at 13 because she either just can't hear me or chooses not to!!!!!!!!! Best of luck to you!
My son referred on the same ear twice at the hospital, during his newborn screen . He ended up passing, later.
Many babies don't pass the first time. In my hospital, if they don't pass, they recheck them before they go home. If they still don't pass, they get referred to have it rechecked about a week later. I have heard of kids who finally pass after the third or even fourth test, since it might take some time for the fluid in their eardrums to absorb. Obviously there are children who do have real problems and never get a pass in one or both ears, so they get referred to special institutes to be evaluated and determine the cause of the hearing problem, to get all the services needed, among them early intervention, including things like cochlear implants. So don't worry now, just enjoy your baby and get as much rest as you can! Good luck!!
Happened to my sister, and it happens all the time. Her oldest got a refer and now he has above average hearing. When my daugther had her's done the tech was surprised she passed. They said most c-section babies don't pass on the first try.
