My mother is going through workman's comp right now (7 years and still going). She feel broke her tailbone in two places and has two degenrative disks form the fall they are refusing surgery, blah blah blah......However they are giving her a voucher to go back to school. Nice right? well my mom is 60, can't stand for to long and cant sit for to long...ugh! Before her accident she was going to school for medical coding, well its been 7 years ago and all of what she learned is considered old and outdated so not even useful anymore. She enjoys the medical industry but doesn't have a College degree. So do you have any ideas for career or schools that do career training for a women who can't sit or stand too long. Most school programs are about 8-12 months long. Some schools we looked into are UEI or Maric College. Thanks a bunch.

phlebotomist (sp) someone who draws blood, ultrasound tech, look into
vocational schools. You say cannot stand for long periods. How about if
she is moving, walking around, not standing in one spot?

What about something online where she can sit or stand as necessary? Could she become a medical transcriptionist?

My sister is taking classes online for an accounting degree. Forget what school, though.

Really...she has been on worker's comp for SEVEN YEARS? No wonder the system is broken. She should be either healed by now or approved for full disability. I know there must be more to it.... You say that she cannot sit for long periods or stand for long periods. I really don't know of any job that doesn't require one or the other... I think that she should really look into the disability route.

Obviously this situation is more complicated than you can completely share here, but has your mother filed, or considered filing, for Social Security Disability?

Honestly my mom has the same issue but not from a broken tailbone-just bad genectics. She is in the medical field and has been for several years now. She is a Medical Assistant and she comes home in tears some days and fears that she will get addicted to pain meds. The medical field is a tough industry because certain things require alot of one or the other. They plug my mom on phones some days even though she has told them that it kills her back to do it all day. However for her to stand on her feet for 12+ hours in one day kills her back as well. I don't think they know what to do with her and if they weren't afraid of getting a lawsuit stuck on them they probably would have let her go a long time ago. She says all the time if she could get approved for disability she would.....she has considered it but she is so close to retirement at this point I think she has opted to stick it out. She has been with this office for years so they are aware of her issues and she even goes to see one of the doctor's within the practice. Sorry don't mean to sound so negative but its the truth-medical field is very demanding and if you can't do the job then it really x's out most of all the jobs out there in that industry but this is based upon what I have heard so maybe something like an ultrasound tech might be better for her??

Even if she has to start over with the coding, some of it will come back to her and be familiar so she isn't having to learn a whole new language. Medical Terminology hasn't changed much. Is she computer literate? That's probably the biggest differance is that everything is done online. I know a lot of seniors are slow or reluctant with computers. If she could get through it, she may be able to wrok from home at her own pace.

Internet franchising. It's a great way for her to make money and she can make her own hours so she can do what she can.
