I was wondering if anyone knows how to get health care coverage for children when the parents are not working. I know my nephew was just laid off and now there wont be healthcare for the little ones. Does anyone have any experience with this? Please advise if you can.
Thank You!

If they go to the Michild website which is Blue cross/blue shields medicaid if you will. It costs $5 a month and it will let you apply online. If you are not eligible for Michild it will automatically hook you up to Medicaid or Healthy Kids. My husband just lost his job and I had a hard time figuring this out. But if you go to the Michild website it will take youto the fia government website also.

When my husband and I both lost our jobs, we went to the Department of Healt and Human Services. I am pregnant was was put on Medicade as well as my husband. So they may all be able to get assistance. Another thing is, with there being children in the home they are eligible for food assistance (bridge card) possibly assistance with rent/mortgage payments, and one thing that has really helped us out is we get assitance with our utilitles. You get get some really good info on michigan.gov website and it will tell you exactly what office to go to to apply for assistance. You'll need proof of the childrens ages and something showing that they're unemployed. The process is a lot easier and quicker than I thought it would be. And with them already having children in the home they should really be eligible for several different programs.

Hello C.!

Is your Nephew getting unemployment bebefits? If so, he might want to check with them to find out if there are any programs he can use while he is unemployed. Also what type of work does your nephew do?

They can go to the state of Michigan website and apply online or print a paper application for the MI Child or Healthy Kids program. Mi Child is $5 or $10 a month and the Healthy Kids is a Medicaid program that is free. They determine eligibility by your income. I have heard that both programs are very good. If no access to the computer is available they can go to the local office of the Department of Human Services. Not sure where they live but the Oakland county one is in Madison Heights at 13 mile and John R.

Suggest to him to go apply at The Department of Human Services (formerly Family Independance Angency).

They have a medicaid program just for kids called Healthy Kids. They have helped us out when my hubby's job was't offering insurance, so if he is laid off, they should be approved no problem.
It is worth the shot.
