I was wondering if anyone out there had a child around 3 or 4 that is very interested in animals? Now I dont mean reading "kids" books about animals, I mean serious adult nature books? My son is 4 and he reads adult nature books mostly about snakes and sharks and really old airplanes. Hes very smart and has a huge vocabulary. He has friends, but I am looking for someone who shows the same interests as he does. I feel he doesnt have alot in common with his other friends. Thanks

What can I do next?

L.--
i have a 4yo son who is also very smart and i don't think he has been getting the right kind of stimulation at his old day care. he will, in fact, begin at the montessori school today. i had to take him out of the other place because it was too crazy and the teachers didnt seem all that concerned about fostering my son's special interests.
where do you live? we are in harker heights. my son loves dinosaurs at the moment and for his birthday in march he got 2 beautiful books about dinosaurs, which he wants to read every night. my husband and i joke that he is either going to be a lawyer or a paleontologist. it sounds like our boys might have some things in common!

Although they may not share his ability to read and enjoy adult level books, it seems to me that most boys that age love animals, whether real or made up. When he starts school, if he hasn't already, he should run into quite a few more animal lovers. My oldest daughter, although animals were not the case, has always had a high reading level, and advanced vocabulary. It has never seemed to hurt her relationships with the other children her age. In fact, she has had friends and cousins come over to our house to borrow books, because she has so many good ones!

You might want to look into getting him involved with children that have the same interests? Homeschoolers are awesome as children are allowed to learn at their own pace and really just be who they are intended to be. There is a wonderful group that meets at Raymond Russell park on Tuesdays. You can find them on yahoo group list: NW Homeschoolers. Very inviting group and if you are curious about homeschooling anyone can guide you in the right direction.

Or get him involved in a summer reading program at the library.
My daughter is the big reader in our family and has been since the day she could start reading. Now at 12 she has so much knowledge that it will be neat to see what she does with it.

Many Blessings, C.

I feel the same way about my five year old. She has always been ahead of the game as far as vocabulary goes. She loves animals too. If she gets to watch tv its always animal planet that she wants to watch. She is not just interested in the cute fluffy things either. She was wanting to watch the emergency vets on animal planet and i thought it was too gory and adult for her to grasp or even see, so i told her no and wouldnt let her watch it. She started sneaking into her room and shutting the door and putting her chair in front of the door when it came on, she loves to see how to treat animals and how to save thier lives in severe situations. She is so interested in animals that she doesnt really do much else but play with her animal toys or read animal books or watch animal stuff on tv. Even when we take her to the park to play she wants to play animal pretend instead of regular little girl pretend! Feel free to private message me any time. My husband is also active military, but he is army. he is deployed right now though, hes coming home in june. I also have a 3 year old daughter.i think you are on the right path trying to find other kids with the same interest.
