Need Very Light Stroller Brand. I Will Be Traveling with a 2 Year Old

I'm traveling with my 2 year old, first time on the plane, and I'm looking for a stroller that's not bulky, very light. I ordered the Triumph Maclaren 2008 and unfortunately this was too complicated to put together and it was just to big for me to carry.- I had to return it. Thanks.

What can I do next?

I bought my 2 year old at the time now 3 a Maclaren Volo I love it. My son is now almost 4 and weighs 45 lbs he loves riding in the stroller I am expecting again and wish they made a double that was not side by side. The Volo weighs approx. 8lbs and has a shoulder strap that worked great in the airport and at Disney. Plus the basket has lots of storage. Good luck!

I saw something online that might be helpful:

http://www.gogobabyz.com/products/infant_cruzer.html

It's almost like a set of wheels you can put the carseat directly on and pull it like a wagon - then when you get on the plane, you put the carseat on the plane seat, and fold up the rest of the contraption. They're supposed to make an attachment for toddler seats this summer - I don't know if it's out yet. But I've seen it cheaper at other sites, so don't settle for the price on the website I included. It's just a starting point. Best of luck!

I have one in my garage that hasn't been used in over a year. If you'd like to take a look at it, let me know.

Do you need it to have a great deal of storage?
What about an umbrella stroller?

With my almost 2 year old, we use the umbrella stroller all the time - and it folds up very nicely.

Good luck with your trip.

Combi's are super light and fold into themselves...so small and I've had one for 5 years and travelled a ton with it...even able to balance my Marathon carseat on top if needed.

We really, really, really love our Maclaren Volo. We use it every day and on plane trips. It's about 8 pounds, folds very easily with one hand, and has a shoulder strap.

I have tgraveled very frequently with all three of my kids, at least 4 or 5 times a year. I wounldn't spend alot on a stroller that is going to get throw around by baggage handlers. I also like having the basket and the recline feature-----goodness knows how many times the "baby" at the time had to do some sleeping in it because of weather slowdowns, canceled flights....its nice for them to be able to sleep, I have even changed them ocassionally in it with it reclined. The basket allows you somewhere to put all your carry on stuff as you go thru the airport dealing with your other luggage.

The size of it is not that big of an issue at the airport, there is plenty of room for strollers. You only pick it up one or two times, at security to put in on the Xray belt, and sometimes as you get off the plane, off the baggage cart as you exit. We have always had some sort of Graco or Evenflow, they are much cheaper and if they get banged up (and they will), its not such a big deal.

We have the MacLaren Volo and it is only about 9 lbs. and it is super easy to carry. I carried two of them along with a 1 and 4 year old through the airports- hey, I'll do anything to go to DisneyWorld. The carrying straps make it so simple, and it is quick to open and close. Very light.

Which Maclaren? The Maclaren Volo is very easy to fold, super light and there is no assembly. They sell it at Babies R Us. I think the weight limit is 45 lbs...

Go to Babies R Us and pick up a $20 umbrella stroller. Nothing beats it for travelling especially when the kid is big enough and you dont need infant seat to click into it. We used this when our daughter was 8 mos old and we travelled overseas. It folds up and is so lightweight.

We have an Inglesina Swift, which I bought after a lot of research. It's similar to the MacLarans, but the wheels are a bit larger. Weighs 11 lbs and folds up small. Very well constructed. We've been very happy with it. We bought ours from a store in the city so it was already put together. Think it cost around $140.

We got a Chicco from Babies r Us. It's lightweight and I can use one hand to open/close and carry it. It's not bulky, yet has a small basket at the bottom for things. I use it at the airport and he rides in it to the gate, then I check it at the gate and can get it as soon as we deplane. It's very durable--was about 90-100 dollars.

PS My husband was deployed overseas when our son was just about to turn 1. It's hard, but just take each day at a time and stay busy (which isn't hard with a little one)!. I sent lots of home videos for my husband. If you need any support, feel free to PM me!

I also have the Chicco and have used it for travel and other for both children - now 2.5 and 13 months. When we recently traveled to Florida we used the Chicco for my youngest and a regular umbrella stroller for my oldest. Worked great.

Evenflo just came out with a stroller. I think right now you can only buy it online at Target. it is $50, so if it gets messed up with traveling not a big deal. we took it to Hawaii with us this summer and loved it. It has a basket that folds down and fit our diaper bag. Big bonus!!

I absolutely love my Maclaren Triumph. I have never found it bulky or heavy and I have major back issues. I especially love the strap I can carry it with. I even tracked down a double Maclaren now that I'm expecting twins. It's such a sturdy, easy to push/turn/set up/close down stroller, and has worked wonderful these last 2 1/2 years (many plane rides, museums, zoos, etc)

I'm sorry it was confusing to assemble, I purchased mine at a store, already assembled.

I purchased this stroller because of my height (5'10") back issues, my small trunk, the up and reclining positions, and my daughters who are 4 years apart. The stroller can hold up to 55 lbs, which, I think, was 15 more than the Combi. My daughter just turned 7 and is now growing out of it. It has been great for her to use it once in a while. (I also love the rain/wind guard).

I guess I am encouraging you to look at the Triumph again. Can you pay them to assemble it? Find it locally and have the store associates assemble it?

Good luck!

Hi L.,

First - I'm sorry that your husband got deployed - that can not be easy - especially with kids at home to take care of all by yourself..... hang in there.

Regarding your stoller issue - we have purchased the "umbrella" strollers & just LOVE them. They are inexpensive, lightweight, easy to use, tiny to store & some do come with the mesh pouch on the back of the seat to tuck a few things in..... you can buy them almost anywhere baby gear is sold & they will be under $35 - $40. We've used one of our until the wheels almost fall off! (we have 3 kids 5 & under and any of them can fit in one of these)

I love my Peg Perego Aria OH. It weighs 10 lbs at the max and it is super easy to close and open. You can easily do it with one hand even while holding your little one.

I second the Chicco. Got it before a trip to San Francisco, for which we did not rent a car. I wanted something light & easily collapsible for public transit, and I didn't quite want to spend so much as for a Maclaren. The not-quite 2-yr old was pushing it up hills. It's served me well on public transit in Chicago as well. Happy travels!

HI L....we purchased a Combi Cosmo Ex earlier this year and absolutely love it. It folds up more compact than your typical umbrella stroller, reclines and has a strap that allows you to carry it on your shoulder. The one drawback is that it has very minimal basket space...but if you have a stroller bag that attaches to the handles of your stroller, this isn't really an issue. When you go through airport security you just unsnap the bag and put it through. Pretty convenient! :) Good luck in your search. We got our Combi at Babies r us and it was under $100 and definitely worth it.

I second the umbrella stroller suggestion unless you want/need a stroller that reclines. Despite having a more "fancy" non-umbrella stroller with all 3 of my kids, I have never opted to use it when traveling, or even when just going somewhere locally, since I can't imagine why I'd want to lug around something bulkier and heavier. It has always worked perfectly and is so light and easy to transport, plus at only about $10 when they're on sale, you can't beat the price!
