one of the coolest paperweights I ever got was a brick (it was the size of a brick but only half as high) with my name on it and the logo of the sponsoring organization. They were starting a building campaign and looking for sponsors.
Hello Mamas,
I work for a construction company and I am looking for some ideas of marketing ideas or promotional giveaways to give to our customers. In the past we have done cups, water bottles, t-shirts, mouse pads, sweatshirts, bags. But I am wanting to think out side of the usual items and do something really cool. Anyone out there have any ideas? Thank you for your time!
Also I forgot to add... I need ideas for office personel, as well as men/women that work in the construction industry outside on jobsites all day.

You could make a month a promotion to donating a certain percentage of proceeds to Habitat for Humanity...up to a certain amount. If I had to choose between companies and I knew that one was promoting some of the proceeds or extra materials donated to Habitat for Humanity or another good cause, I would opt for that one... it would make the decision quite easy actually : )
I was thinking of construction based items.....hammer, measuring tape, safety goggles, etc. With a quirky saying, that doesn't offend.
Who is your target market audience? People who are remodeling? New construction? Large projects? Decks?
Personalize your items to match the consumer's need. Otherwise, it's just overpaid fluff.
If it is just for name recognition, do items that are used OFTEN (pens, clothing, safety jackets, etc). It takes people to see a name at least 5 times before they make the call and WANT that name. Otherwise, it pays to be on the top of the google search, with a quality website, and a quality person who answers the phone - or responds VERY quickly via email.
One of the best things we got was at the Byron Nelson Golf Tournament last year.
The sponsor was some beer company (I don't know who). It was an ice cold small towel inside the package.. Boy was that nice in the heat!! The towel has the company name on it too. I don't know how it worked to stay that cold in a package like that but it was very well received by all.
I work for a construction company also. We have done many of the things you a have in the past. The item that got us the most positive responses though was when we did pocket knives. We got a TON of positive responses on that one.
I'm not sure who you are marketing too though. We do commercial electrical construction, so we are generally marketing to specific employees of the General Contractor....not the general public.
Do you do remodeling or custom building for specific customers (like, building on a room for the Smith family or a deck for the Jones family, as opposed to constructing an apartment building)? If you do, you might give them a small 8 x 8 photo album with a few photos of their new addition already in the album, to start them off. If you've designed and built their deck, put a photo of the old yard, then one of the deck under construction, then the finished deck with a note that says "may you fill the rest of this album with photos of many celebrations and quiet evenings with your family, enjoying your new deck".
travel mugs for coffee.. i also really liked the mini tape measure and pocketknife ideas that were mentioned
How about those mini-tape measures that fit on key rings? I think they only do 6-8 feet, but that's pretty handy.

Coffee mugs? Beach towels? Reusable canvas bags? Sorry, these are kinda ordinary :-(
I like those rubber things that you use for opening tough jar lids, they are easy to logo... I just got one from a plumber recently, love that thing.
Those new filtered water bottles might be a good item.
Never discount the tshirt, they are a great way to advertise, my husband always talks to people that have an identifying tshirt and asks for their card.
I had a carpet vendor give me one of those handheld, fold out Japanese fans, comes in handy in my office during hotflashes, I thought that was unique.
I loved the folding Captains chair we were given.. My old one bit the dust.. so it was perfect timing.
Here is an example that looks the closest to what we were given by out Insurance guy.
Hello! I am a small business owner. We can make a book showcasing your work and/or before/after pictures of what you do and you could let your potential customers look through it. We can also help you with a website if you don't already have one or we can make a digital scrapbook for you for your customers to look at. As far as for your customers, if you know someone crafty, they could build mini-replicas of what you built and put your name on it. These mini-replicas could be used as paper weights, pen holders, paper holders, etc. For your office personnel, men/women that work on job sites all day, you could get them gift cards/certificates or gas cards. Another idea for the people on your job sites is to give them an all- weather goodie bag that has stuff like hand sanitizer, sunscreen, gloves, bug spray, band-aids, etc. Hope this gives you some ideas! My website is http://the-scrapbook-artist.com. Good luck :)
I always like insulated travel mugs or the thick, insulated cups with lids and straws.
Also, flash drives are big....
Oh--have you ever seen those Power Clips? People LOVE them. They're magnetized so they can be used on the fridge.
For a construction company, you might consider a Swiss army knife/multi-tool, a hammer, NICE ruler/tape measure, and in a tough economy--think about gift cards--people love getting gift cards when they purchase a job, service, product, etc.
Sunglasses, hard hats, ruler-level combo...
They have key chain tape measures that I think would be handy to have.
And cool hats are always well received.
Things that our venders give us that are always appricated are bottles of hand sanitizer with their logo on them. And for a contruction company I am sure they can't always wash their hands when they are out on a job.
We use the pens that are given to us. And pads of scratch paper. If your logo is up top, and I write something down for a client, now they have your info in thier hand too. If they come in our office and see us using your pens, it's like we endorse you inthier minds.
We also like the car air fresheners. They buy the clip ons that go in your a/c vent. Thier logo is on the head of it, so, its staring at you in your car everyday.
When our office does promotional marketing, we really try to stick with stuff that people can actually use. Some of the most useful items I've gotten from other companies are hand sanitizer (especially the spray kind), chap stick, sunblock, and cute little desk decorations (like one company gave me a tiny fluffy arm chair to put my business cards in).
Theme-based swag-bags are cool, too. Like a beach bag filled with sunblock, hand sanitizer, a hat, beach towel, umbrella, flip flops- any combination of those things.
