I wanted to know if anyone knows anything about Dr.Umstead in Trinity? I am currently with Dr. Gallagher in Clearwater (Countryside)and have no complaints. I now live in Trinity and am wondering if it would be worth it to switch to the new doctor closer to home. Less driving time would be great. I am not pregnant but have been trying for over a year and hope to be pregnant soon.
Let me know good or bad any info. Thanks so much.

Dr Williams is on Seven Springs and he has an office in Tarpon Springs. Him and the entire staff are great. I had all 3 of my kids at his office. I had a girlfriend that named her son after Dr. Williams. His bedside manner is great. He is so calm and just speaks with such care in his voice. Good Luck

I'm surprised to see these responses. Dr. Umstead delivered my son and from start to finish I was totally satisfied. His nursing staff is always considerate and I do like the NP. Dr. Umstead is a very "serious" doctor, so he likes things his way, but sometimes it's safest that way. I chose hypnobirthing and he went right along with it. My baby was delivered in two pushes. Some people might misunderstand him, it's just that he knows what he's doing and likes it done that way. My only complaint is that sometimes the office wait is long...but he's probably delivering a baby. Otherwise, I've been there 4 years and I'll stay. Good luck on getting pregnant!

Hi H., I would not switch to Dr. Umstead. I went there with my last pregnancy, and when I was 4 months along I fired him and drove down to clearwater to see Dr. walter. I also live in Trinity. I personally did not like him, and we had a very serious issue with him. There are other good ob's in the Trinity area. Hope this helps you.

I would look for a Dr based on your own personal philosophies, what type of birth you would like to have down the road? (if you have researched it), what hospital best suits your likes/dislikes and needs?, travel time to the office?, and then what other people's opinion is....

If you are trying to conceive, you really should to make a selection based on the OB rather than GYN department. Do you want to avoid c-section unless ABSOLUTELY necessary?...then you would want to ask them about their c-section rate (both the Dr and hospital each). Do you think you might want a water birth?...some Drs don't do that as well as some hospitals don't even have the accommodations for it. Does the Dr go to the hospital you have researched that you want to deliver? Would you rather see a certified mid-wife and does the OB office have them? Does the Dr have the personality and bedside manner that matches your personality so you will be relaxed, comfortable and low stress during pregnancy/delivery? How do others feel about the Dr's/midwives at the office you are considering? How many Drs are in the office...few enough to get to know each or too many so you feel like a number?

Since you are hoping to get pregnant, I would make the selection based on pregnancy needs and wants.... You will feel so much better if you are happy and comfy about your OB, even if you just go there for GYN care for a bit :-)

Best wishes!

I'm not sure if he is the same one that used to be in the Clearwater area or not. I have 2 friends that both had him and did not like him one single bit. I have heard that his bedside manner is just......NOT there. The OB/GYN I see, also has an office off of Seven Springs Blvd. I've been with them through 2 pregnancies.

I originally saw him this pregnancy [I am 37 weeks]. I liked him well enough. I've also heard other people really like his attitude about birth - he told one woman he'd get on his wet suit if she decided to labor and delivery in the water at Helen Ellis, where a lot of the other doctors that deliver there won't deliver a water birth. Most appointments are with his NP who I wasn't particularly fond of. I get along with everyone and found this woman fairly callous and just overall was not impressed with her bedside manner. There was confusion about my dates early on and she left me with the impression that it was possible my pregnancy was doomed, then when it was confirmed that everything was healthy asked "were you really that scared? I guess I should have told you everything was OK?". I've heard similar stories where she was even less considerate of women experiencing a miscarriage. Things started going downhill when he told me the books I was reading on medical literature & statistics were silly and outdated, and that birth doulas really just got in his way. I finally left the practice because I began to feel as if everything would be great if I followed all his orders to a T, but the practice wasn't excited about me asking questions or researching anything on my own. I think it really depends on your approach to your healthcare - if you're a passenger along for the ride, you might find the practice great. If you want to be a real partner for your care, labor, and delivery, he might not be the best bet.
