Need Ideas for Places to See/eat in NYC

I'll be in NYC this weekend for a long shopping trip with my mom. We've both been a lot of times so we have done the basic tourist stuff. Does anyone have any suggestions on some off the beaten path things to see? Also, any great restaurant recommendations that may not be super expensive but really good food and fun?

What can I do next?

We've been going to Carmine's for years and never miss it when we go to NYC. It's right on 34th right in Times Square. I'm sure tourists go there because of the location but we love it. It's fantastic italian food with great service. We love catching a show and then eating late. The portions are humongous so you might want to share one entree. Oh, and the best way to catch a table is grabbing one at the bar because it's usually a long wait. Seating at the bar is fun anyway because we always meet interesting people. Have a great time...I'm haven't been since last year!

I am partial to the upper west side - so I will suggest you try going along Columbus Avenue. This is typically not a touristy area - it's where I hung out when I lived there. Columbus Avenue offers lots of fun places with outdoor eating. Then, after those huge portions, there are so many pretty places to walk. you could walk around the Museum of Natural History - or heaad right to Central Park. You might want to explore activities off-Broadway.

Have Fun!

My husband & I moved here from Westchester County, about 30 minutes north of NYC. We use to go to the city all the time. One place we LOVED to eat was John's. It's a pizzeria down near Times Square. It is an absolutely BEAUTIFUL building on the inside...I think if I remember, it may have been an old church at one time..the stained glass windows inside and there is a beautiful "drawing"...the food is just as awesome as the scenery! I was also going to recommend Carmine's, but I see someone else already did...that is to die for Italian!!

Have a blast...we sure miss the city!!!

There are some great authentic Italian places in Little Italy (not as large an area as before because it has been taken over by China Town). Also China Town just down the street has some great places and you can walk around the Soho area that some great places to visit. Also there are two deli's across from each other. I will get the name and edit my response to you. They are always fun to eat at and they are both great. Don't know where you are staying but, it is fun to visit all the great department stores and the great toy store FAO Schwartz. We took the Hudson River tour and really enjoyed the sights. The deli is called Carnegie Deli and the one across the street are famous for their food. Katz Deli is also suppose to be very popular with the natives.

About 3 yrs ago, daughter and I had a mom/daughter weekend and absolutely loved it.

We stayed at the Waldorf and we walked a lot. We did com up on a little Italian restaurant a couple blocks or so from Waldorf which was a hole in the wall place thatbwas awesome. It was something Lindas ... I don't know the name exactly. I think I have the business card somewhere and I will look for it. The place was small, great food and mostly regular customers, we just happened upon it.

We had a great lunch at the Waldorf.

Have fun!!!!

Another fun but touristy place was lunch at Tavern on the Green.

Don't know if you have any friends in the area, but ask the locals - staff at the hotel, whatever. They know of the cool places that aren't touristy, and hopefully you'll run into a gem that you never would have found otherwise. Enjoy!
