My husband and I are going to NY on Sept 18-22. It will be both of our first time there. We're staying at a Hilton hotel in Times Square. Any advice on how to see shows (tv shows!) (I've already tried for Letterman and SNL with no success) but would like to see Dr. Oz or Live w/ Regis & Kelly. Also,. does anyone know of a great sushi restaurant we should try? Any Broadway shows?? Shopping? Thanks!!

Lucky you! Its been some time since I've been in NYC, BUT, I used to be in the travel biz, so I know a little about the city. I'd advise getting tickets to any broadway shows BEFORE you go, online. A agent friend and I got wonderful tickets online at a small venue was fantastic!! A must to do when in NYC. Also, shopping in Manhatten is great! There are alot of stores that have designer clothes VERY cheap. You didn't say if you would have a car while you are there or not? I didn't when I was there, but found my way around well enough between taking the subway system & cabs. Its really difficult driving in Times Square & Manhatten. Be cautious while taking the subway system as well, I never took it at night, much safer taking a cab. I dont' have any advice as far as tv shows or sushi sorry. Have fun, it's a wonderful city!!
Hi there
We were in NY at end February and we had a great meal at the Blue Fin restaurant on Times Square - in the W Hotel. Lots of seafood, fish etc and really good sushi - huge selection.
I've seen Wicked in London and it was absolutely amazing, so get tickets for that if you can!
SoHo is good for shopping
Enjoy your trip
We've been a couple of times, as a couple and then a few yrs ago hubby sent daughter and me on a mom/daughter weekend. LOVED it
We are walkers and we walk everywhere if possible. We stayed at the Waldorf Astoria (at least walk through it, it's beautiful!), we booked tickets ahead of time for Lion King on Broadway (Loved it), we used the double decker buses to get around to sights such as Ground Zero, location to catch ferry to Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, etc.
We aren't into the tv shows so I can't help there, nor with sushi. Times Square was fun. We ate at a couple of hole in the wall Italian places that were awesome. A must do is carriage ride through Central Park.
We saw Wicked in Dallas this summer and we'd go see it in a heartbeat on broadway if the opportunity arose.
Enjoy and pack as much activity as possible while you are there!!
The name of the discount ticket place that Erin is referring to is called TKTS. http://www.tdf.org/TDF_ServicePage.aspx?id=56& do=v
The TimesSquare booth sells tickets for day of performances only.
SNL and Dave Letterman are VERY hard to get. My hubby tried for a few years before we got on a taping of SNL.
If you walk around Times Square, they always seem to be giving out free tickets for something -comedy show, talk show, etc.
Caroline's is a great comedy club in Times Square.
If you want good Italian food, check out Little Italy. All restaurants in Little Italy have tables outside to eat. The San Gennaro festival will be going on while you are visiting http://www.sangennaro.org/. Great food, games, vendors, etc! Love it!
Also, Chinatown is right next to Little Italy. There is great shopping on Canal Street- they have knock-offs of designer purses, watches, jewlery, etc.. you name it! Very cool to check out as well..
Also nice views from Top of the Rock (in Rockefeller Center).
Nobu is a very well-known sushi place (frequented by celebs). Anothe fav of mine is Tao (they have sushi as well as chinese). Very cool atmopshere and excellent food! http://www.taorestaurant.com/
Oh, check out Macy's in Herald Square.
Have fun!!!!!!!
Great sushi place is Haru, its right in TS I believe on 44th between Broadway and 8th. Its right by all the shows and everything. They do the morning show on Broadway and 45th or so, so you could always go outside and stand in the crowd like you see on tv. Also, for shows, I've heard Lion King is amazing. Try StubHub.com. Or I forget what its called, but there is a place right in TS that you can buy tickets for shows that day for a really big discount. If I can find out what its called I'll message you. But maybe the concierge at the hotel can tell you. Where you are staying is a good location. You will be close to Central park and the Empire State building (you'll be right in the middle) so you can always go to those places as well.
I used to work right in TS (right above the ESPN Zone and the NASDAQ at a law firm) so I am very familiar with the area. If you have anymore questions please feel free to ask.
welcome to my hometown! i'm a nyc born and bred mom and wife. some of the things i suggest are:
-call ###-###-#### for tickets to doctor oz. i've been lucky twice to get tickets quickly. i think he begins taping when you are here. you can also try this number for jimmy fallon tickets. you can attempt standby for SNL or the letterman show. i have a few friends who have been lucky doing that.
-on the 18th & 19th, there is a special on broadway called 20at20. it's all off broadway shows for $20 a ticket if you arrive 20 minutes before call time. here is the site: www.20at20.com
-if i were you i would venture to anywhere along the water on the west side of the city for dinner or drinks. the frying pan is pretty awesome, good crowd, NOT touristy at all and good views. southstreet seaport is also good to walk around and have an early dinner or lunch at. you can also head to the trade center area if you are there.
-for authentic sushi, and if you aren't scared of some really authentic japanese cuisine, you can take a stroll along st. mark's place in the east village. there are some really cool t-shirt stores and some record stores around there and it is dotted with very cool and cheap japanese restaurants. it is near NYU so expect a young, hip crowd.
-i also suggest korea town (k-town) for some other authentic asian cuisine. there are a few bars and karaoke places around there too. and it is right near the empire state building.
-one last thing, the area you will be staying iat is painfully touristy. almost nothing there is worth seeing, except to sneak a peek at some news shows being filmed. what is good is that you are near the theater district. i just went to go see Power Balladz (off b'way, lighter version of Rock of Ages) and that was really really good. if you go a bit further west, there will be blocks dedicated to one type of cuisine (Little Brazil, Little Vietnam, etc...). you can google all of these places and see what sparks your interest.
-one FINAL thing and i must say you can't pass this up: in union square, there is a dessert place called Max Brenner. don't eat regular dinner or lunch here, go late at night around 10-10:30 and have just dessert. it is just AMAZING!
have a wonderful time on your trip!!! and be safe!!!
If you are looking for tickets....try this place...........http://www.anrdoezrs.net/click-###-###-####-10755883 On the right hand side, go down to where it shows New York and click on it......
Good Luck and have a great time!
Go on the Staten Island Ferry. It is free and you get a great view of the Statue of Liberty. Also by Battery Park- where you get the ferry, there is a pathway along the hudson river that goes the entire length of Manahattan. Beautiful. Central Park is great as well as Museum of Natural History. Downtown to Wall street is great also. THe roads are so narrow down there.
Hi Fiona,
If you have a few hours free, I'd suggest picking a neighborhood and simply wandering around on foot to get a real feel for the city. Although Times Square is fun, it's not the part of the city that many of us who live here love the most.
SOHO and the east/west village are a lot of fun and have interesting shops and great restaurants. Perhaps after a show, you could take a cab (if you're not comfortable with the subway, my personal fave for travel in the city) and get dropped off in the west or east village for a late bite to eat or a cocktail. I'm not sure of your ages and interests, but feel free to e-mail me if you'd like any other information. Have fun!
p.s. Century 21 is a great place for shopping.
