My son is 7 years old & has an issue with sleepwalking. When he goes to the bathroom at night, he doesn't wake up & ends up urinating over himself & all over the seat. I am not sure how to stop this. At times he can go weeks without doing it & then do it constantly for a week straight. I have tried to be understanding & started to give him punishments, but I am at my wits end because nothing seems to be working. Please help with any suggestions!

What can I do next?

I have never been in this situation, but have a friend who has. Her son did it until he was 11 years old. He had a weak bladder that was hereditary. Have you tried taking him to the doctor? Here are a few other considerations that may help. Good luck!

1. avoid liquids after 6:45pm
2. give herbal supplements for strengthening the bladder (i.e. cranberry)
3. is he under any stress?
4. do you wake him up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom? maybe you could wake him up at midnight to allow him to go?

Hey J., I actually have a sleep walker my oldest son is 11 and has done this since3 he started walking ! My doctor told us never to wake him just follow him and make sure he didn't hurt himself ! We put chain locks on the outside doors so he can't unlock them and something he does in his sleep are down rite scary but we never wake him we talk to him and make him feel secure I hold him tell him he's fine and after a few minutes he goes back to bed sometimes it may take up too half an hour. We have even had to walk him aroung the house because he thought someone was breaking in ! Alot of sleepwalking is sleep terrors ! AKA night mares ! He never remembers anything in the morning even if we put him in the bed with us which we do often because it's scary too see your child with there eyes wide open but talking out of there head ! Talk to your child doctor they will tell you the best steps to take !

Hi there.... Perhaps you can limit his drinking to a small amount within an hour to an hour and a half before bedtime, so that he doesn't have to wake up to go in his sleep.

I don't think punishing him will help, b/c he's not doing it on purpose and has no control over it. Have you tried keeping his bedroom door closed and the bathroom door closed. Sometimes obsticals can wake someone up if their needing to go to the bathroom. Maybe you could hang a bell from his door knob or the bathroom door that is loud enoughthat may startle him. If he was a grown man then Id tell you to add something that would make him stump his toe (lol that wakes my husband up quicly) but a bell may do the trick.

I am sorry to say that my answer probably won't be what you want to hear, at least from my experience. My son did the SAME exact thing. He can't help what he is doing if he is like my son. My son actually still sleep walks sometimes and he is 22. We just have to steer him back to bed. Thank goodness though it is few and far between now. The urinating problem all over the toilet and the surrounding area stopped years ago though. He outgrew it, I can't remember the age but I believe it was by the age of 10. It could have been earlier but it definitely was well after age 7. You just have to be patient with him. In my opinion punishment does nothing but make him embarrassed and hurt. Again, this is only based on my previous experience. Have you talked to his pediatrician about it? I know that my son also had a urinating in his pants during the day problem until he was 8 or so. We punished we did everything, finally he stopped. If I had talked to the pediatrician he probably would have discovered my son had a kidney medical disorder that it turns out nieces and nephews have and there would have been medication to take to stop it. I have felt so guilty since I found out that also was a problem he could not help. Talk to your doctor just in case. Well, I am sorry I could not give actual solutions, just experience.

try rewards instead of punishment - a penny or dime each night he stays in bed, with the goal a favorite treat. and honestly, some people sleepwalk into teens and later.

I don't think a punishment is justice for what he's doing, sleep walkers don't know they are doing it. You need to talk to his doctor about it and see what they suggest but mean while I think Colleen's suggestion is great with the bell I'd try that, your not s'pose to let a sleep walker hurt themselves and you shouldn't startle them either I'd also look up sleep walking on webmd and see what they suggest but make sure you put in child treatment and suggestion maybe different for adults.
