When my oldest had lice twice in her lifetime no one else in the house (we are a family of 5) got it. THis latest time was even more of a nightmare as she was so much older and anything drastic we considered woul have major repercussions in the way of teasing for her...

I looked online and found a website offering an all natural way to get rid of both live and eggs and it was perfectly safe even for babies. It was $57 for the kit. Had I had the money at the time I would have purchased it. We ended up just shortening and thinning out her extremely long, thick hair. However, she kept getting more even though we cleaned everything...SO I asked a pharmacist about it and they suggested either adding tea tree oil to her current shampoo or buying tea tree oil shampoo. Apparently tea tree oil is a natural repellant for them so they don't develop a resistance to it like with the chemicals in most of the kits offered to get rid of them. I purchased the shapoo and conditioner (it was a bit expensive 8.50 for shampoo and same for conditioner plus the shipping for 16 oz each) but, I feel it was worth it if it means I will not have to worry about lice in my child again. Also, it has a pleasant scent to it and has a natural detangler so using the smaller comb for removing the egg should be fairly easy...

Good Luck... Here are some sites for your perusal...

One of my foster kids got them, and kept getting them. We tried everything, did exactly what we were told to do. Nothing worked for 6 weeks.

What finally worked after 6 weeks was a simple prescripion from the dr. We used it to wash her hair an then picked it with a comb. Sprayed all carpet and permant fixed fabrics. Washed everything else in HOT HOT WATER AND DRIED IN A HOT HOT DRYER. We also sprayed all stuffed animals down and put them in a polastic bag tied very tightly, in he garage for 3 week per dr. orders. Not another issue.

We also started utting her long hair in ponytails and btaids so that it could nt swing and come into contact with another person so easy, De said those things could jump 2 feet. Good luck.

The comb didn't work for us either. After using the over-the-counter stuff from Walgreens (RID, or the generic version) I ended up taking my daughter outside with a spray bottle filled with water, a comb, hair clips, tweezers, and a little bucket filled with 1 part rubbing alcohol plus 5 parts water. I put her hair up in sections and went through each section, about 3 inches across and 1/4 inch thick, and I would pick out the eggs with the tweezers and rinse them in the bucket. I went outside to get sunlight on her hair; it made it much easier to see the eggs than indoor light. And I kept her hair wet with the spray bottle because that made the hair darker; again, easier to see. It took over 2 hours, and she has thin hair, but it worked. I used the 2nd application of the shampoo a couple of days later and never saw those nasty little things again.

If it's possible, put your kids' curtains/pillows/throw rugs in a plastic bag for at least a few months. Steam clean where you can, vacuum a few times where you can't. Good luck!!

I had that problem with my daughter also when she was about 6 and had beautiful long hair to her waist. My son was about 1 at the time and he ended up getting them too from her, but my husband and I didn't. For my son it was easy I just cut his hair really short.

I tried a home remedy on her since we didn't want to cut her hair. Put Mayonnaise on her hair combed it through with the little comb then left it on her hair for a couple of hours with a shower cap, then washed it off. It also made her hair really soft it served like a conditioner. use the plain mayo without the lemon because that could lighten the hair. After that I just went through her hair a few more times taking out the dead eggs that were left.

Good Luck!

I think this is something everyone should know. If ever you have issues with lice use vaseline. I know that this sounds totally crazy. But my daughter got lice twice in a matter of 2 months. The first time I didn't find out til she had been treated twice. But the second time I took a flea comb and combed the vaseline into her hair. It smothered all the live ones and made it so the eggs couldn't bond to her hair follicle. I then took the lice combs and hot hot water and combed out her hair. I used several combs so that I could soak them in between uses to get all the vaseline off of them. Then for her school's sake I use the lice shampoo and combed her hair through again. The lice shampoo actually helps to get the vaseline out of her hair. But it has been the best remedy I have tried as of yet. And cheap. The vaseline will take a few days to come out of the hair but it makes it so that if any eggs are missed the lice cannot lay anymore since they can't bond to the hair. Hope this works for everyone else as well as it has worked for me. Take care and Keep Smiling!!!

My son had it just a couple of weeks ago. A co-worker suggested the website www.headlice.org for any questions you may have. We used the over the counter lice kit but it was super toxic and, even though it may have worked, I don't think we would use it again. Some of the home remedies that we were told work are; 1. Listerine or vinegar on the hair for an hour or 2 under a shower cap 2. mayo in the hair overnight or 3.Vaseline in the hair overnight. We went with vinegar each night for a week (since we had already done the toxic treatment). It seemed to work. I think that next time we'll forgo the toxic stuff in exchange for the mayo and vinegar. Also, I learned from the website that head lice can't be passed back and forth between you and your pets. And the best remedy for the furniture is just to vacuum it. We did the beds, couch and carpet each day for that first week. You can buy a spray to put on it first but I'm not sure it made much of a difference. I would also highly recommend ordering a comb called the Terminator online today (you can google it). My friend told me to get it and I drug my heals for a day or 2 thinking we didn't need it. Once it came in I wished we had bought it sooner. It only took a couple of days to get to us and it worked much better than the one I set I bought at the pharmacy. Good luck. I really feel for you. I still get that creepy crawly feeling when I think about them!

Our school had a pretty bad outbreak this year. The nurse sent a letter home telling parents a few things. She suggested either using the Paul Mitchell shampoo and conditioner with tea tree oil or adding several drops of tea tree oil to your own shampoo and conditioner to rid and keep from getting lice. Also to pick at the eggs every day until they are all gone. She advised not to use the over the counter shampoos because of how toxic they are to children. I for one added the oil drops to our shampoo and my kids did not end up with lice and there were several kids in my daughter's class who had it. I used the real tea tree oil from the health food stores. If you have dogs or cats, make sure you treat them also with their flea shampoo or the tea tree oil shampoo. Just be patient. From what I understood from the school nurse, once you have killed all of the bugs just keep using the shampoo mix at least every other day. The bugs can not live in the menthol environment and you will eventualy get all of the eggs. Also it is summer time, try cutting your son's hair pretty short and it will be easier to take care of his hair...Best wishes to you and your little ones.

2nd vote for the Robicomb!! It saves you lots of time in the hair. DON'T USE LYSOL! If you can't afford the spray, put all stuffed animals/linens/pillows in a trash bag and let them sit for a month (room gets clean also LOL). Let her "camp out" this summer on her floor and let the mattress sit also if yu can't spray it. If you don't use the right spray, they will just keep coming back! And you don't want the kids at school to find out-they can be so cruel and believe me, they know why your kid is going to the nurse and then being sent home!!

Last year my 9 yr old daughter kept getting lice and we could not get rid of them. We tried vaseline, vinegar, mayo, tea oil, 3 different over the counter medicine's, combing, picking, etc... We got rid of them over the Christmas holiday's and then when she went back to school she got them again. Finally, someone told me to go find a hair color as close to her natural color as possible and color her hair. We never had another problem with lice.

Well I'll be honest with you. I'm hispanic and my mom always told me and did this all the time for friends and family. Is every night get your child and a straight bottle of alocohol that clear liquid and put a white towel on your daughter's neck pour that alocohol all over her hair like it is shampoo or something and just use the comb and comb using the white towel to show you what you have taken out. Continue doing this til there is nothing on the white towel. This really works and tell her your just cleaning their hair really well.

I know people that have used mayonaise for lice and eggs. Just slather their hair and scalp in mayo let it sit for a bit, then use the comb to take them out. I would also suggest buying a flea comb used for animals as the teeth may be closer together and thereby making it easier to remove the smaller eggs.

My youngest is 17 and we're still dealing with lice every couple years. If you don't have the metal comb, get one, the plastic are no good. It is easier to see the egg casing while the hair is wet, I've also found it is easier to work outside where the sun reflects on the casings more. For some kids this is a constant battle and it doesn't make you a bad or dirty mom. Just be sure you have gotten all the eggs, you've treated every piece of bedding, clothing and all the stuffed animals

Welll only thing that m y daughter & i have gotten to work was mayonnaise. Completely saturate hair & scalp, let this remain on hair for @ least 2 hours.
This is only thing that i have ever found to be susseful.
But use real mayonnaise, not the miracle whip.

Hi A.,

When my son got lice a couple of years ago, I spent hours daily scraping the eggs off with my fingernails. I didn't get them all, so when those hatched we started the process all over again. That's when I discovered the RobiComb. They sell it at Walgreen's. It's an electronic lice comb that zaps and kills any lice that have hatched. I've heard that vinegar can make the dissolve the glue on the eggs. Maybe try washing with vinegar, then combing with a metal lice comb. But I highly recommend combing daily with the RobiComb, because then you are killing any live lice that hatch from any eggs that you missed. Also, comb everyone in the house daily while anybody has lice or nits; then if you do a couple of times a week after that you can prevent any more infestations.

A few years back, my then boyfriend had a 6 year old daughter who we could not get rid of her lice eggs. He treated her hair EVERY Sunday but they still were there. He was not getting all the eggs and they kept coming back.

One night, we stayed up all night to clean her hair. We got a chair, he sat in it and she layed against his chest. I started at the bottom, pinning her hair up and doing very small one inch sections at a time. I would just comb each little section until it was clean and move up to another section, we did use the "nit comb" for the "sections" but it didn't remove the eggs totally, I just used my nails. (she had very long hair, it took hours!!!) We did this every day for one week. (the following nights took a lot less time). After a week, and only finding an egg or two that we missed. We finally got them all and they never came back.
Just like you, it took over a MONTH before we could finally get ahold of the situation. It can be done though, don't give up!!

The best thing for that situation is Tea Tree or Melaleuca Oil. It has a very strong scent. The oil suffocates the lice, and allows the egg to sluff off very easily. I work with a company that puts Melaleuca oil in alot of their products. They have a shampoo that contains a very high amount. It will get rid of the lice and if used regularly, it will keep your kids from getting infested again. We use it as a preventitive. It is very aggrivating fighting lice and the kids feel ashamed and dirty, or mine did anyway; although lice like clean hair not dirty. Its still emabarassing for the kids.

If you would like more information about the products you can email me at ____@____.com or visit http://www.safer4myrugrats.com.
