Use Helman's mayo on the scalp. You may want to google the specifics of how to apply & how long to leave it on but it works.

The lice could be resistant to the pesticides. That is becoming more common. They might be treating everything.

try liberal amounts of mayo. it smothers the lice and is good for the hair. They have sleep in it so get shower caps. Do it one night then repeat in about a week to get the new ones. I would use the rid comb and comb through their hair in the morning. My friend did this with her daughter and it worked. wash the sheets and all just like you would if using the other stuff.

We had a horrible year one year, my children's school had a lice epidemic that lasted all school year. It seems there was one family who never tried to get rid of it and they kept having slumber parties. My daughter had it 7 times, my son once. Finally in desperation, I prayed for wisdom (it should have been the first thing I did). Garlic tablets were my miracle. I ordered several bottles of garlic tablets from Shaklee (they have spearmint and rosemary extract to mask odor, I didn't want my children to smell as if they were warding off vampires). My children took them 3 times a day, and WE never had lice again. Lice DO NOT like garlic when they eat. Eventually all my friends had their kids on the garlic too! Keep in mind your grandchildren could be picking it up from the school again and again, jackets hanging next to each other or piled in a pile on the playground during recess, pillows and blankets at nap time touching, girls doing hair at recess, etc. At the house, follow the directions from the website given by other posters.

I went thru this with church camp in the summer with 3 teenagers! LOTS of hair! We dealt with it 3 times before I could get a solution. Company called ACCESS NUTRACEUTICALS,INC Google them. Product is called LICE KILLER. I ordered a large amount due to being panic strickened! It is a combination of herbal oils. I did some extensive research online before I made my desision. It was so hard to deal with the lice. My daughter has long hair and she had the bug. BUY A LICE COMB AT WALMART. We used this product on everyone in the home.I had my daughter sleep with it in her hair shower cap and towel! Wasn't pleasn't but paperwork recommended it! I washed her first in the kitchen sink and combed bugs till I cried took about 45 min. Make sure you smash the nasty things while wiping the comb on paper towels. I then did my sons..one has hair to die for thick and wavy so it was full of eggs..another 45 mins and a puddle of tears from me!!Got my last son done and thankfully he had none of the above! Nor did I. I passed a bottle on to my daughters friend who had it also and kept my daughter out of church till I knew it was all gone. Continue washing everything in the house. There is a spray that can be bought also. I sprayed pillows,mattresses,chair backs couches carpet,etc!! I was so grossed out about it! It will spread 'bug form' chair to person and so on! Hi S., We had the same problem with one of our grandchildren. We purchased something called a Robocomb. it costs about $30.00. I called Walgreens here in Texas and they said they sell them. I bought mine at CVS but it was in Fl. I don't think they carry them here. It is not a regular lice comb, it is electronic( batteries) and you comb it through the hair and if it comes in contact with the lice it makes a little beeping sound and zaps them.it does not hurt, tell the little ones no pain involved. We did this everyday and it worked. After a very short period of time there were no more bugs. Then just periodically we continued to check for them until we felt we were clear. Of course we washed all bedding,bought new pillows, cleaned curtains, sprayed carpet and furniture in the entire house and even bagged all stuffed animals that couldn't be washed for 30 days. Ugh ! Make sure that the adults they live with treat themselves also. And I would demand that the day care also cleans for them and requires all children to be lice & nit free before they are allowed to return to the center or you may never be rid of them. It's time consuming and expensive to do your house but it's the only way. Good luck- the comb is a miracle worker!

LICE!!!! I H A T E those little buggers!!! Now imagine having 6 kids!!!! Here's a fail proof method to help get rid of them AND keep them away. Our school...well all the schools are having very bad lice problems. I've even been over at friends house helping them ALL night removing eggs. That would give most people the heevy jeevies...but anything to help the fight. Here is the system that I have found that works best when all else failed.

Hair Cholesterol. Yep....its about $2 for a jar. Slather the head completely then wrap with saran wrap for no less than 1 hr. Afterwards wet it just a bit and comb throug...don't wet too much you want to keep it sticky so the combing will pull the eggs out & the smothered lice. Comb out in tub so you can rinse off the comb. The first two weeks do this every three days...yes three days. Then go to once a week for atleast one month. Then as up keep do it every two weeks.

To help in between the treatments use coconut shampoo & conditioner but add about 15 drops of Tea Tree oil which can be found in a drug store by the vitamins. Lice hate coconut milk...make sure the shampoo has coconut milk in it not fake fragrance.

Spray & vacuum all matresses then put on the plastic mattress covers. I hate those things but they are necessary. Put away all stuff animals for a good while. I'm talking about until you are atleast 3 months free of lice and eggs.....absolutely free of them. If you don't want to use the chenical lice spray...use diluted tea tree oil & water. 20 drops in a small water bottle. Now Tea Tree oil is not the best smelling stuff but it will go away by the next day.

Do not allow ANy sleepovers till this is clear. And then when you do have someone stay with you...wash all sheets and treat hair. This will be atleast a year long battle. Persistance is the key! Oh....and always wash sheets when you treat the hair. Yes it makes for a ton of washing at the start but this is a must.

Oh the hair Cholesterol is usually found in the african american hair section at the store. It comes in a plastic jar with a screw off lid. Its just really thick conditioner. Your kids will have the softest hair! That's an upside to it! :)

LiceRX or the Fairy Tale line from Sweet and Sassy. It has a Lice treatment, and then a preventative shampoo and hair gel. Lice like clean hair. When I hear of an outbreak, I spray my daughters hair with hairspray. Or you can use the preventitive shampoo and hair gel from Fairy Tales. Everything in the house needs to be washed or baked in the dryer for 30 mins on high.

You've gotten a lot of great ideas about the products to use - but I don't think people mentioned the process. First thing, all pillows that have been used should be tossed. Replace them all - you can wash in hot water and dry but it is best to just replace. Vacuum often - at least once a day. Change bedding every day until you aren't seeing nits anymore. Comb out the hair every day with the nit comb - if it is long hair, this can be a tiring process and may take an hour or so but it is worth it to have them gone. All stuffed animals should be washed in hot water & dried with hot heat. If they can't be washed, put them in a garbage bag for at least a week. Buy the spray and spray the car & the furniture and anywhere else a head lies. It is an exhausting process and can be expensive but it is well worth it when it is gone for good. Good luck.

when my family got lice about 5 years ago and we put cooking oil on our heads. The oil helps suffocate them. Then I used the rid combs to comb them out. The shampoo's are harsh.

If you have access to a sauna I would try that. After 10 minutes, adult lice die at 125 degrees and eggs die at 130 degrees. That is what we did when my granddaughter brought lice home from day care.

We threw all her pillows/blankets etc into the sauna too.

Her sleeping bag we stuck in a plastic trash bag and tied it up for 21 days. That works too.

If you do sauna, make sure the kids are well hydrated so they don't get dehydrated in the sauna.

Otherwise, it's toxic chemical lice treatments and tons of hot water washing.

Dry Hair with a hairdryer on hot.

Also, put tons of conditioner on hair and comb thru with the NIT comb. EASY.

I hated the 'treatments' and combing thru with the treamment.

Two above items got rid of our lice issue.

We had this problem when my youngest son was younger.

What I found is best for us was vaseline. You coat the hair and scalp (it does not have to be goopy but a nice layer), cover their pillow with a towel and let them sleep overnight. It takes a couple washings with baby shampoo, but it kills them and it also makes the nits come off the hair much easier too. Some say mayo will work (we have not tried that)

She needs to make sure she washes all pillows, cases, sheets, blankets, stuffed animals and clothing they have worn or used in last few days (lice do not live more then a day or so away from a host).

If she has animals she may want to get a good flea dip or ask the vet for special shampoo for lice. (we have had pets and did not have to treat them).

Vacuum the beds- and perhaps buy plastic covers for the beds, vacuum couch and then throw out the bag or empty and throw away the contents of vacumm.

She may need to talk to the day care and find out what they are doing to be proactive. Do they allow the kids to bring things from home (blankets, stuffed animals)... are they checking heads each day and sending home those who have active, alive lice.

I find it tends to happen more when birds are migrating- they carry lice.

By the way, the products are all natural so you don't have to worry about the side effects of all the pesticides being used on your little one! Some of those over the counter lice treatments have some very strong pesticides in them & could probably cause all sort of sicknesses in our kids. Also, the licemeister comb ($10)is the best comb I have found in my experience. You can buy it at walgreens, if they carry it at your local store. I bought mine online. have them use a shampoo with tea tree oil or rosemary oil in it. they could be missing some nits or play re-infestation at school... most likely the latter. so send the kids w/ very oily scalp and hair to school for the next few weeks and check their heads after school. did they check their car/booster seats? I got lice a few years ago and it made me cry! It was horrible... but I heard of a treatment and it worked for me. The best part is, it only cost $1!
Get the cheapest shampoo you can find (V05, or White Rain) and use about 1/2 of the bottle on your dry hair. Just smother it really well into your scalp, then wrap saran wrap around your head, and leave it in for about an hour.
Then rinse it out and have someone pick the nits out of your hair. The lice combs did not work at all for me because my hair is fine. You have to have someone meticulously go through your hair section by section, and pull off any nits with their fingernails.
I don't know why the cheap shampoo works as a treatment- my guess is that it's thick and it smothers those guys. The shampoo is also MUCH easier to rinse out of your hair than a bunch of vaseline or mayonnaise.
I repeated this process a week later, and the lice have been gone. Good luck!

I just read in the Readers Digest magazine about a new treatment for lice. It's a thick cream called Ulesfia, like Vaseline or mayo, but it works differently. You have to leave the others on for so long because the lice can close their breathing apparatuses (called spiracles) for hours. Ulesfia prevents the spiracles from closing, so they die within minutes. You still have to treat again in a week and wash everything but I think it would be better than having greasy hair forever. It doesn't tell how to get it so you might have to google it to see. I also use Lice Free Zone shampoo and leave-in spray from Circle of Friends for preventative. It's a professional product to get at salons but I can get it for you if you want. Hope this helps!

Tea tree oil works well. You can get Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Oil Special Shampoo, or you can just put tea tree oil in your regular shampoo. But it is not enough just to use the shampoo (of any kind). The most important part is to get all of the lice and nits out of their hair. The first day could be an all day process. You have to go through every piece of hair. The real trick is to use the shampoo with tea tree oil every night for at least 2 weeks and comb through to check for more nits immediately after washing hair. Also, make sure you have sanitized everything they could have gotten on (pillows, the couch, the car seats, etc). It is a long process, but it worked for us and they did not come back.

We've gone through this and lice these days don't respond to the tried and true remedies of the past. 1 - I used a Tea Tree oil (Central Market carries it) to treat for lice - its expensive but under $20. There is also a Tea Tree shampoo that is a great preventative to use after you've gotten rid of the nits because they can't attach to the hair shaft its by Thursday Plantation - after using that we have had no further trouble. They wash once a week with that shampoo. I also found that at Central Market.

It's by a company called Wild Child. It's all organic/natural ingredients. You put it on the child's hair, cover with a cap and they sleep in it. Next morning
you wash their hair out and the lice are gone. Hair is soft and silky. Smells great. It was incredibly gentle. Hopefully we won't have lice again, but if we do, this is the only product I will ever use.

My daughter just got through them and I found that Tea Tree Oil worked the best. I first washed her hair with the RID lice treament kit, washed absolutly everything possible, and there is a spray you can buy now to spray your couches, car seats, etc. After a week I noticed she still had some eggs so I bought tea tree oil and the tea tree oil shampoo. It smells really strong but it is also recommended to add a few drops of the oil to all your shampoos just even for proper scalp care and prevention of lice. I havn't seen any since. The biggest hassle is washing everything...bed sheets, clothes ,coats, toys. Hope this helps..

Coca cola, the soft drink. It gets rid of the lice and the eggs. You willhave to lean them over sink and just pour it over their heads for about 5 minutes.... It has to do with the fizz, which is why it can't just soak on their heads....hope this helps! Best of luck to your grandkids and you!

Thankfully I have never had to experience this. My mom was a school teacher for 27 years and she would swear by it that if you put hair grease in your child's hair, they will not get lice. I have to agree with this as none of my siblings (there are 4 of us) have ever gotten it. Good luck.

My kids and I caught it from their daycare. I used Texas Lice Squad. One treatment and everything was gone. We haven't had any problems since.

I have not yet had to deal with this personally; however, my mother-in-law and sister-in-law both have. My sister-in-law recently had someone tell her that lice have built up an immunity to many of the lice treatments out. Personally, I'm not sure that's possible, but either way, she ended up getting rid of them by covering her children's hair completely with mayonnaise (yuck) for a period of I think 1/2 - 1 hour. The thought with this is the same as using conditioner, grease, etc. that I have seen in the other posts. The other thing that is really important is to bag pillows and stuffed animals for two weeks. This gives any eggs time to hatch and the bugs time to suffocate completely. Not sure about treatment for carpet, furniture and the rest of the house, but I'm guessing it would involve a lot of vacuuming. Hope this helps, and so sorry you are having to deal with this!

Find a bottle of "Lice Free". It's the best stuff ever.

Also, the Lice treatments that use Pyrethrin and Permethrin are the same thing as FLEA SHAMPOO...BUT they are a TON more expensive. They have the Same active ingredients, and are usually the same strength. I used a cheap flea shampoo in my laundry and to mop. I mixed flea dip in my carpet shampooer and treated the carpet and sofa. Then, I vacummed two to three times a day and emptied after EACH vacumming.

I am a school teacher, and have had numerous active cases in my classroom. If I have an active case in the classroom, I just use the flea shampoo once a week 'til they child is clear.

With an infestation, it's real important to get all the nits and eggs. It also helps if you blow-dry and use style products. "They" say that's why teachers rarely get Lice. We adults tend to blow-dry on a regular basis (the heat kills the little buggers). And, we use style products which inhibit the infestation. The gels and sprays help because if you pick up a bug during the day and it lays eggs, there's a good chance that the glue is stuck to the gel and will wash out with regular shampoo.

It's not fun. So sorry you are going through this.

Unfortuantely I caight head lice when I was in high school from a hotel! It was awful so I knwo exactly what they are going through. The only thing that worked for me was coating my entire head in olive oil and sleeping with it in a shower cap with the olive oil in my hair. I am telling you it works! The oil suffocates the live lice and makes the eggs (nits) slide out easily when combed through the next morning. Make sure that you are using a lice comb to comb out the eggs the next morning before they shower it out. It may take a couple of shampooings to get the oil out but trust me it will work. My grand daughters had the same problem. The doctor said the long clean hair is what attracted the lice to thier hair over and over again. I hated using the poison so much and after awhile it simply became in effective. What I finaly found was a product at Walmart simalar to LICE ICE ( found in line) called DR.lice. It is a gel that is left on the hair all night then combed out in the morning. You then wash then every day comb that hair stand by strand until all the nits are gone ( liked it too because no poison was in the product). It was a lot of work on a child with hair to her waist but after a year of battling it well worth the effort. Lice are gone. Could be too she moved to another school and away from who ever was not getting rid of the problem. Don't blame the child this is a hard problem to deal with some time. Don't for get to also treat all bedding carpet and clothing. Wash what you can in hot water and vacuum the rest. You cab also get the lice spray for carpets and furniture. Good Luck.

Pure Tea Tree oil. Kills everything as soon as it gets on the head. The oil smells bad. It will burn a little but not bad and it wont hurt you. If it gets in the eyes it will burn very bad. I used it on a rash and then rubbed my eyes.

They need to make sure they are washing the clothes they are wearing. And also wash their bedding in hot water.

Regular pesticides don't work anymore, it's about finding a good natural product and combing the heck out of the hair! Getting out all the eggs and bugs is essential. At least that's what I was told when I finally had a company come to my house and treat my family, I tried it all.
