Hi Moms...My 2 month old son is having congestion for almost a week now..I have tried hot shower steam but has little improvement. He sounds congested especially in the morning. The Pediatrician suggested to get a humidifier. Can you help me with which one to get? I had the Penguin from Crane during my pregnancy but that stopped working in exactly 3 months :(

Eagerly await your inputs..need to get one soon for the little guy...he is BF and ends up choking...

Hi D.,

Looks like most of the mommies have given you excellent advice. I will agree with a cold vapor humidifier. I'd also suggest a little of baby Vicks on his chest. Even without a cold this seemed to help my son.
Best of luck,
D.

My son went through the same thing and when he started teething he was always congested. We bought a $15 Vicks Humidifier (small room humidifier) at Rite Aid and used the medicated liquid only when he had colds. The Pharmacist helped me pick it out. Ours does not have replacement filters. We have used the humidifier every night for 1-1/2 years. I replace the water every day or 2 and clean the filter in water/vinegar about every 2 weeks. It sits elevated on his dresser - he is still in a crib. Some people say you should use a humidifier so much but i think it helps with all the dry heat in the winter months and air conditioning in the summer months. The crib wedge (babysrus) worked good also for congestion.

Find a cool mist one that looks the easiest to clean and fill.

Hi D.,

I recommend the Vicks vaporizer since it doesn't have the risk of bacteria that humidifiers do. We used ours for our baby for the first few months and it helped with congestion during the night.

We have a Slant Fin Germ Free Warm Mist Humidifier. It's really great & rated a best pic from Consumer Reports. We've used it when our daughter has had congestion and it really helps when she's trying to sleep.

Hi D.,

My granddaughter has sinus problems and was very sick a while back. My daughter bought an awesome cool mist humidifier by Vicks. It has a large tank on it and you use a clear vicks liquid product that diffuses into the water which runs in the humidifer for 8 hours. It has never failed us. I just checked the humidifer tank for a model number but could not find one. However I did find a web site. It is www.kaz.com. There you will find a model by vicks that is similar to the one we have along with several other options by other makers. They are all available for purchase and all have information about themselves as well. I hope this will help you. I know we are extremely satisfied with ours. They are pricey but they work well and are worth it.

Sincerely,

It is so stressful to watch a little one who is sick,so I know how you feel. My nurses always say get a cool mist type, but I went to Walgreens and bought a Vicks hot steam one because of the design and it was inexpensive. We are on a tight budget and I could only spend so much. I have been quite happy with it. Frankly it's so easy and as the mist comes out "warm" as soon as it's in the air it's cooled and I think the steamyness is what makes it work. It has a little cup where you can add medicated liquid and so it adds a mild menthol type smell which works great for colds. Put a towel underneath it whereever you place it so your floor does not get damp and just make sure it's not "too" close to baby or anywhere they can get to it.... I put my baby in thecrib and the vaporizor on the floor a few feet from the crib. You just add water and some salt to make it steam more and plug it in. I think it was around $20. Good luck (and you could slightly elevate the baby's head for sleeping, but not with a pillow (raise one side of the mattress a little if he'll stay in the same spot all night) L

Our pediatrician and pediatric pulmonologist both recommended a cool mist humidifier for our daughters. We bought the Vicks Ultrasonic visible cool mist humidifier. I also bought a Britta pitcher so that I could use filtered water in it. This way, I do not have to buy/use the Vicks filters in the humidifier. Ours has worked for two years now.
