Need Help Finding a Very Competent OB/GYN for Risky Pregnancy!!!

Hi-
Please bear with me while I explain myself a little here.

I am considering becoming pregnant again, and this is a difficult decision b/c I had a hard time with my first (and only) previous one. I ended up having eclampsia (which none of the numerous Drs. and nurse practitioners I saw through the HMO caught until very late, despite my climbing BP and severe swelling), was induced, and due to further complications was re-admitted to the hospital after only being home 3 days. Basically I didn't even get to see my son at all for most of the first two weeks of his life. The worst thing though was due to the Dr. on call at delivery, he did not repair my 4h degree tears correctly and caused me to (immediately) have a recto-vaginal fistula. This was an absolutely awful time in my life, and I had surgery to correct it five months later, but the surgery was not 100% effective. So any future deliveries I have must be via c-section.

I am looking for an OB/GYN who will listen and take the time to really evaluate me, not just have quick dismissive visits, and take actual good care of myself and my child. I feel that I can't go through another pregnancy without a good Dr. to rely on, I was too submissive the first time around about my care and that led me to having numerous problems. If someone can recommend to me a Dr. who is good with pregnancies that possibly tend to have more complications than usual I would be so grateful. Thank you to all who have made it through this long story of mine! I have been struggling with the decision of whether or not to even try for another one and finally I think I may be ready to at least seriously consider it.
(P.S. - I have Sierra Choice Insurance, in case anyone wants to know).

What can I do next?

I am so sorry about your birth experience! it sounds aweful, and it sounds traumatic. Having had a horrible on call dr. too, a bit of a traumatic experience in the hospital myself, and an infeted cesarean scar, I can totally relate to the fear, and the anxiety of another pregnancy.

That said, I would recommend Dr. Harter, in the summerlin area, or Dr. Juarez in Henderson. I am not sure about the insurances though. They're both very caring.

Have you also look at the options you want for your cesarean ? there's resources online for a 'family centered' cesarean, and the local ICAN chapter can also give you some. you can find them listed on the www.birthyear.net website, under "international cesarean awareness network". I'm M., the Librarian for the chapter.

also, if it helps any, www.plus-size-pregnancy.org has great resources on emotional healing after a traumatic birth, and there's also a book called "rebounding from childbirth".

good luck, best wishes, and huggs.

M.

Hi K. - I just wanted to let you know that my best friend had a 4th degree tear and all sorts of complications with her first birth. She has since had two vaginal births after that. I know that you might not even want to think about going vaginally after all you have been through, but I wanted to let you know that the option is out there. My friend's experiences with her last two births were positive ones with no complications. Anyway, her doctor was Timothy Sauter and many of the nurses from St. Rose Hospital apparently go to him as well. (They told her that when she was there 2 weeks ago having baby #3). I also really like my doctor, Scott Olds. I was fortunate enough to have no complications with my pregnancy or birth so I can't tell you how he deals with such pregnancies. Good Luck!!! I hope you do decide to have another and I hope that the second pregnancy will be an uncomplicated one with an easy delivery!!!!

Desert Perinatal Associates are *THE BEST* doctors I have ever met!! They specialize in high risk pregnancy - actually I think you have to have a referral from a regular OB/GYN. They have offices all over Vegas. I HIGHLY recommend Dr. Wilkes. He is amazing and really cares about you and your baby. You will feel like you are his only patient. A bit of a wait in the waiting room, but you will never feel rushed once you are with the Dr.

K.,

You might want to consider seeing a perinatologist. There are a number of practices in town. I saw Dr. Brian Iriye for my triplet pregnancy a little over 3 years ago. I was extremely happy with him.
