Okay, I am really having a hard time finding a leak proof straw cup for my girls that DOESN"T LEAK! I am so frustrated. My husband insists on cups with lids while I am really wanting to get my almost 5yo away from the whole sippie cup thing. I just think she is beyond the age of sippies but she still has problems with spilling open cups, even at the table. So I decided to compromise and get leak proof straw cups. Well I can't find one that doesn't leak, the two kinds I've gotten both the liquid will bubble out the top of the straw. I woke up this morning to find the cup I had in my beg from yesterday had done this and my whole bag was wet! I have the Nubby kind that has just the straw, no closure on it and also the Playtex one that has the little closure, both of them are doing this. Any ideas?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Wow, thanks for all the input ladies! I've been trying to get her away from the sippies and using regular cups, she loves the straw ones and they are great for trips. She's such an on the go kid that she just needs something that won't make a mess around my house! Anyway, I've decided to try out the Tommee Tippee brand for on the go and just use the take and toss with lid and straw for meals times.

Thermos makes ones with straws that also have a lid. My nephew has been using one since he was 2 and he loves it. I also have one for me. I know Target sells them, they're kind of expensive but they're great! Kept ice frozen almost the entire day while we were at the zoo!

Get a kids Camelback bottle. They can be upside down in my purse and not leak! They are an investment at $14, but worth it. You do have to be careful about not letting water sit in the bite and sip valve too long or it will mold (6 days about). They last forever and are great for a child 18 months to adult. I have an adult size one for me. They are also BPA free.

I second the Foogo cup and you can also get them with characters on them at Wal-mart, target. They aren't called Foogo they are called Funtainers when they have the characters and they seem to be just a hair cheaper when you buy the Funtainer. But they work exactly the same. My kids have been using them for over a year. My little one threw her cup and broke the lid but ordering a replacement was easy and only maybe $2.

And our almost 6 year old still uses a cup with a lid when we are out and about and if he has a drink anywhere in the house but the table. Around the house we use the Take and Toss cups with the lids that work with a straw and I buy disposable straws.

I just got my daughter the Foogo stainless steel straw cup a couple of months ago, it's awesome! It is leak proof too. It has an attached top that flips open by pushing a button, so it also stays clean. I carry it in my bag all the time, and it's been great. It's also thermal so it keeps everything cold or warm for 10 hrs. I was looking for stainless as a healthier option to sippy cups, and I can't be happier with it, and have been surprised with it's quality and performance. I also feel it's a "big kid" type of cup, and it just looks cool! Here's an Amazon link so you can see what it looks like, But I got mine at Babies R Us for a dollar cheaper. http://www.amazon.com/Thermos-Phases-Stainless-Bottle-Pur...

You have a lot of choices here! I like the Sigg brand stainless steel bottles with a sport top. The top turns (easily, my 3 y/o can do it) in a screw motion and it seals completely. I put it in her lunch box for MDO and haven't had a problem with it leaking. I also held it upside down over the sink for quite a while to test it out. They are super expensive, but they are worth it I think. We use it everywhere and anywhere! I just read an article about the stainless bottles vs the aluminum ones and learned that the aluminum ones are lined with BPA on the inside...awesome. So, even though they are pricey, you may want to stick with the Siggs. My one year old loves to drink from those bottles too, although he's much messier since there's no stopper! ;)

If spilling is still a problem, perhaps there are other cups without lids that might be better than what you have at home. Lightweight plastics are what we usually find for children, but they topple easily. There are sturdy GLASS glasses that are made for children and they do not spill easily. They might help with learning, gaining confidence at the table, etc. Check out www.forsmallhands.com and look up juice glasses. A set of 6 5-oz. glasses is less than $10 and they are great!! Ours have been dropped and I have never had one break or chip. This catalog has many other great things for kids. Any parent or child care provider should check it out!

She is well at the age for a regular cup, yes she is going to spill ocassionally but umm who does, I still have the ocational tip of the cup and "whole in my mouth" lol

I hear so many on the hunt for a perfectly spill proof cup but you just are not goign to find it. if you want liquid to come out of something it is going to have the potential to spill. My three year old has been using a regular cup for over a year and we have maybe a spill a week, and we hardly ever take a sippy with us anywhere, they don't have to have istant access to fluids...we do use the old school square "sippys" with the straw that folds down fro long trips, they spill if not taken care of but unless my kids fall asleep they do pretty well and we only use water in them so if there is a spill it is not a big deal. After seeing my son take so well to the cup I am not sure if we will really be using a sippy with my third, it just harvests a dependancy of easy access fluids to tote around which they don't need.

I use Muchkins. There straw sippy cups don't leak for me. Although i really don't think a five year old should still be in the sippy cup stage. my year and half old can use a cup and only gets sipper cups at night. If your worried obout spills train her with water first until she gets it down. kids will spill but you have to let them learn. tell your husband that.
good luck
ps- i started my son with water bottles instead of cups then moved to cups when he was ready. they have an easier time because of the smaller hole.

The Playtex sippy cups with the flip open top with the straw never leak for us. However, the straw is rubbery so it's probably more baby-ish than you'd like. Spill/leak proof though!

We used the Playtex one, but I learned to pinch the straw to open the valve and let the liquid flow back down into the cup before I closed the lid. I hope it helps!

If it helps your case (and not to make you feel bad,) our 4 1/2 year old usually uses an open cup at the table and we just give her a small amount of at a time so that spills aren't so "major." We recently bought some Zoo Pals cups and plates as a special treat, and the cups have coffee cup-style lid. We are using them at supper time now. I wash them by hand (they are styrofoam - ick!- but at least I can reuse them) and we can use the same cup for about a week. But she only gets a cup for snack or meal times, and if she takes one in the car with us then she is responsible for carrying it and making sure it gets back into the house. It took a little work, but it makes life a lot easier now! Good luck!!!

the only cups I have found that hasn't leaked are the tommy tippee brand that are only sold at babies r us (maybe toys r us, not sure). they come in different stages according to age. My son has the first stage, a "sports bottle" type, a "commuter cup" type and he loves all of them (17 months old). I have no issues with leaking at all. I haven't tried the foogo cups so I can't comment there, but, nuby is the WORST. hope this helps.

We really like the Playtex leak-proof sippy cups and straw cups. As long as the lid and "stopper" thing are properly in place, we do not have a problem with leaks. Good luck!
