Currently we have the American First Cross cold mist humidifier and I can't stand it for many reasons. Our daughter, now 11 months, was sick often when she was 4-6 months old. We are expecting our second baby in February and I really want a new humidifier. What brands do you guys recommend? Thanks!

Vicks warm mist humidifier. See other responses to cool mist. the warm mist doesn't feel 'warm' so its not like the rooms going to heat up. I like the warm because 1) it doesn't get moldy 2) the steam is clean.
i've used it periodically for two kids over 3 yrs.

I also had bad luck with the cold mist versions. We switched to the Vicks brand warm mist that has a liquid version of the Vicks vaporizor stuff. It will make the room seem steamy though if you don't let it air out.

Last winter I found the plug in version that is marvelous. It looks like one of the air fresheners you plug in. It has a little pad that has the Vicks medication on it and VOILA! my little ones could breathe a whole lot better. If it's just minor colds and stuffiness, I use this one. If it's more asthma related or a more serious bronchial condition, then I use the other one. My son has asthma and the Vicks one has really done wonders for him.

Candy,
I faithfully use a humidifier when my kids now 9,9,6,& 18months old. I have the Vicks warm mist humdifier. LOVE IT!!
Their is no filter to clean out and change. I just rinse both the container and the base after about 3 days of straight use. It comes with Vicks vapors to put on the top and the heat warms it up. It then is put into the air via the mist. It does make the room a bit steamy so open a window in the morning to air it out.
The best thing I ever bought.
Trish

We had very bad luck with cool mist humidifiers. If you don't clean them almost daily, they spread germs and mold and make conditions worse. I didn't have time to clean ours constantly, so we ended up switching to a steam one, that we keep up high out of reach of my son and daughter when necessary to use. I've been using them for almost 4 years on an as needed basis, and neither child has ever gotten burned (which you need to be very careful of since they could get burned easily). We've gone through a couple of them, but I think the ones we have now our Vicks brand. Like I said, we only use ours when the kids are sick, especially since they put out more moisture than the cool mist ones, so it can make a room seem damp if you close the door when they sleep.

Honeywell cool mist humidifiers have worked well for us. Just remember to dry it out prior to storing it for long periods. They are pretty quite and you can adjust the settings. They have replaceable filters as well.

Ours is by "Vicks" and it has worked well. It was probably bought at Target, knowing my shopping preferences.

Hi Candy,

We use the Vicks brand - it's the one with 2 tanks and it heats up the water for warm mist. It is a bit large, but all three bedrooms are across from each other and if we put it in the hall, it gets all the rooms, so it works REALLY well! It does have a bright blue light, but we just put a stickie note over it and it's fine. The only thing is, I didn't know I'd end up worrying all night about the hot water. I worried that if I left it in with the kids, they would somehow knock it over in the night if they got up and get burned. We ended up sleeping in the living room with it down the hall. Something to think about warm vs. cool mist. Usually the cool mist is recommended just for this reason, but I was told by our pedi. that they work the same. Other than that I really like the brand and we've had no issues. It's easy to clean, just dump out the tanks and let air dry. There's also a little "cup" on top so you can add a vaporizing liquid, like Vicks, if you desire. We bought it at Babies R Us, but I can't recall the cost. Good luck! - Kim
