Hi,

We're transitioning our son to a twin bed. I need an inexpensive mattress pad that will not make him hot. He is warm by nature so he's been sweating on his toddler bedding. I'd love some advice on what to look for to keep him cool and protect his new bed.

Thanks for your help!

So What Happened?

You guys are so helpful!!! I checked out most of the stores that you all recommended. Some were out, some only had one twin (Nana got him bunk beds). I settled on WalMart. I spent a bit more and took a chance on the one without plastic because I was afraid that my "little heater" wouldn't be comfortable otherwise. The night sweating has stopped and I'm very happy that I'm not worrying about it any more. THANK YOU ALL!

I just replaced the one my 5 year old had on his bed because it was plastic, and I bought one at Target that is water proof that is 'fuzzy', not that plastic covering.
He actually seems to like it better, as well. No 'crinkling' noises when he hops into bed, yeah know?

Hope that helps! Target is a great place to find the simplest things! I found it in the Bedding Area.

Good luck!

My kids are both 'hot bodies' as well who won't even sleep with sheets or blankets. Mattress pads are a pain as well. I know you said 'toddler bed' but I am not sure if it's a crib-sized mattress or a twin-sized. Both of my boys are in twin-sized and we found inexpensive, waterproof covers for their beds at Target. They are thin and not too cushiony, so they don't keep the bed hot. I wash them with their sheets and have had no problems with them. They've lasted about 6 months so far. They have pillow-top mattresses and the cover fits them fine. It's very basic but 'does the trick' and did not cost a lot at all.
Good luck!

I purchased a waterproof mattress pad at Mattress Firm for my then 2 year old daughter, now 4. I like it because it is soft on one side not just a rubber sheet. Don't recall how much it was but I remember thinking that it was more than I thought it would be.

By the way, both of my children (4 and 13) were locally adopted and we were at the hosptial when they were born.

Hi C.~
We recently switched our 31 month old from his crib to a twin size bed. I then began the search for a nice, waterproof mattress pad. I started at WalMart but wasn't happy with the quality vs price. I ended up getting his at Ross. Around $12.99 for a very nice waterproof mattress pad. Nice soft quilted top, with a hidden waterproof layer. I would check Ross, T.J. Maxx and Marshall's. They will have the nicer quality ones, but at a nice low price.

Good luck~

I bought one in Target which doesn't have that Plastic layer under the Pad.
Good thing.....it doesn't reflect the heat back to your body and makes you sweat like crazy.
Bad thing......it is a kind of loose when you have it over the Matress but once you have the bedsheet on it works fine and stays in place.
I believe i paid $12.- or so for it. Matress Giant has something similar for a little more. Check it out.

When we transitioned, we didn't have much money. So we put our kids on a air mattress until they out grew wetting the bed. You can get them for $10-$20 in Wal-mart, and they kids slept well. It saved me a lot of work for those times they had accidents, and until we could afford a mattress. Also because of the ripples in the air mattress, they stay very cool at night! I do put a regular mattress pad on it, but that makes the air mattress more comfortable.

I have the same advice as the one below. Walmart sells a great pad that has a fabric on one side and plastic on the other side. I would stay away from the straight fabric ones that claim to stay dry they don't. I run a daycare and use them on all of our beds and that is the only one my son doesn't sweat with.

We purchased one from Kmart - Martha Stewart brand I think. It was $20 and has the quilted covering on top of the plastic. It is very comfortable to sleep on (and I would know since I have slept in her bed many times!)

My only advice is when drying it, don't dry it all the way so the plastic doesn't melt on the high heat.

At Walmart they have waterproof mattress covers. Don't buy the plastic one. Buy the one that is made out of material. Works great and is washable.

I got a great one at Target. I don't remember the brand because I bought it several years, but I had the same concern as you because my son sweats big time when he sleeps. He also gets night terrors and sometimes gets completely drenched (to the point where I have to change his PJ's). Anyway, the mattress pad I have looks and feels like a regular mattress pad and is comfy to sleep on. It's not like the plastic-y ones that can be really uncomfortable.

The other thing about Target is that as long as you have your receipt (or pay with credit card and bring the card with you) you can return it within 90 days. I've returned several items that didn't work as I expected and have never had a problem.

Good luck!!
