When I was a single mom, PELL grants were available and very helpful. I second Columbia College. I attended on campus for a 18 CH. I am also hoping to go back soon.
I am wanting to start taking some college classes, I never realy went to college after highschool. Now that I have a child I'm starting to make some smarter decisions! But because I'm a single parent and my son is only 3 1/2 months I am looking for a college that offers online courses. I am also wondering about grants for single mothers. I am sure there are some out there. In fact, I have been told that I should be able to get all my schooling paid for because I am a single mom. But I look up grants online and it's just ridiculous at everything that's listed and you never know what's legit and what's not. I get overwhelmed easily and a lot of times just need some direction. So does anyone know of any specific grants out there? I know Longview Community College participates in a program for single parents and that's great but they don't offer online courses. If anyone has any ideas on colleges with online courses and specific grants that don't cost $ to apply for let me know ! Thanks!

The first place you need to go is FAFSA.com. It's the Federal site for financial aid. Good luck and GREAT for you !!!
Where are you located? There is a college in Rockford,IL that has online classes and classes at the campus. It's called Rasmussen. If you want more info feel free to contact me on here or you can contact me at ____@____.com
You can go on line to www.fafsa.ed.gov, this is the US Department of Education Federal Student Aid sight. It will tell you what information from you is needed to apply for federal student aid.
For an online program try http://www.ccis.edu. It is Columbia College and they also have a campus in the KC area. Good luck.
i am not sure of were you are from but if you go to your local comminity college web page they will help you get set up..they have lots of ways to help you get started
i know at my community college they have day care while you are in school right there at the school
Hi S.~
Just wanted to pass it along that Longview and all the Metropolitan Community colleges have online classes. Not sure where you got the info that they did not. It is hard to get into some of them because they fill up very fast.
i am a single mom at 20 and i am going to school right now also. I attend St. Louis Communtiy College and i know they have some online classes.
I would love to chat with you about being a single mom, i know how it is and i know it is good to have people that are in your same situation to talk to.
Hi S., I have been in your same situation. I went to JCCC and got an associates degree there, they offered many classes online. Whatever school you attend will have a financial aid area and will set you up with anything and everything you need to know. Like the others have said, the federal pell grants are from FAFSA.
I ended up finishing up my bachelor's degree from DeVry University, they have everything 100% online, you never have to go to the campus for anything. It has been much more expensive and is more then the grants cover, but it has been worth it for me with the convenience.
You might also want to check out some scholorships, I know there may be some of those that are offered, however I don't know of the better sites for those.
One last piece of advice, the sign up for pell grants begin in January, and you can tend to get more money if you sign up early.
Good Luck, I know it's hard but it is so well worth it, I graduate at the end of this month!
I teach at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, MO. The LCIE program is a once a week night class for adults who work. If you could get a babysitter one night a week, you might want to consider that - because I love having students in the class, and I think it helps to talk to a live instructor when you're just starting back.
But if that isn't doable - Some of my students have taken classes online with the University of Phoenix - they have extension centers all over - including Missouri and the St. Louis area. I think you can get your whole degree mostly online. I have heard it's hard to transfer credits if you don't like it and want to transfer to another program. I don't have first-hand experience with them, but you may want to check them out.
Congrats on deciding to go back to school and good luck.
I am still taking online classes after having two kids (3 and 1). I take them all online through NAU - National American University. They have been great! They are extremely helpful and never push you to take on more than you should. I can get you intouch with my advisor if you would like more information or check out their website. If you want to contact me I can tell you more as well. Contact me at ____@____.com Good luck with whatever decision you make!!
Many grants come from the government. You need to complete the FAFSA (free application for Federal Student Aid). Go to www.fafsa.ed.gov this is free to complete so be sure not to fall for a scam and pay for it. You should also check with the college you are interested in attending. Many Junior colleges have student services for single parents. Good Luck!
