Need Advice - Falling

ok moms, here's the story. My almost-10-month old fell off of our bed today. Our bed is not too high - about the height of a couch. She landed flat on her back, so I don't think there's spinal trauma. She cried for maybe 5 minuts, but she tends to be a very happy baby anyway. She's eaten breakfast as usual, was a little more fussy than normal when she played, and settled down for her nap without problems.

So do I panic? Or let it go?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks mommies! Every once in a while, you need to hear what you already know, and it's so comforting when that happens! Ellie's fine and more fun the ever - this is definitely my fav stage so far, despite the perils of un-child-proofed pack-rat's house

Don't panic. Keep an eye on her and trust your instincts. She's probably fine.

When my third child was a baby, I was an exhausted basket case (hey, wait a minute, I'm still an exhausted basket case). You know the stage when they have just learned how to move themselves by wiggling? Well, three, count 'em three, times in one week I forgot he could wiggle, put him in the middle of our king size bed and left the room. I then heard the crash of him falling to the floor. And I seriously had never dropped a baby before.

He not only survived just fine but definitely does not have brain damage or physical impairments.

These things happen. If the feet move the spine is probably fine the real concern with babies and falls are head injuries. What you want to look for is

• loss of consciousness
• drowsiness
• dizziness
• confusion
• vomiting
• irritability
• drainage, clear or bloody, from his nose, mouth, or ears

Two or more of the symptoms above and you go to the ER.

The falls have just begun. Soon she will be jumping off things, and you will have the same worries. Follow Allison K's list down below. NEVER PANIC, it just causes the child to get more upset.
My daughter (who is now 19 and perfectly healthy) fell over a banister and landed on the cement landing 10 feet below when she was four. She ended up with stiches in her forehead and a catscan. She remembers EVERYTHING about the "adventure". Yes my heart was racing, yet I never let on to her how worried/scared I was at the time.

First, take a deep breath! Then, follow Allison's list below (it is the same one our pediatrician gave us.)

Our daughter did the same thing at about the same age, the only difference is that our bed is really high. I almost had a heart attack, but didn't let her know I was upset. I followed the list, determined that she was okay and went on to do it all several more times as she went through that stage of being mobile, but not afraid.

Take heart in knowing that this phase will pass, too.

Hi L.,
I agree with what other posters have said. If your daughter had a serious concussion, you would see a couple of the signs mentioned below. These symptoms can show up the next day, so if for any reason she throws up today, becomes lethargic, or really isn't acting like herself, you might want to take her in. Three years ago, my then two year-old son ran into our room wearing socks, slipped and fell backward, hitting his head *hard* on our hardwood floors. I freaked. He seemed okay after crying for a bit (which is actually a good sign -- when I called the doc, he asked if my son had cried and it I had been able to comfort him relatively quickly [yes and yes], and the doc thought that was good), and after talking to his doc over the phone, I did not take him in. However, the next day, my son threw up repeatedly. Off to the ER we went. Sometimes it takes a day or two for symptoms to show up. Turns out my son just had a very poorly timed stomach bug! He was totally fine. Kids bounce amazingly well!

let it go. If she was hurt you would know it. James has fallen off the bed twice. Both times he cryied but was fine 5 mintues later. one time he even got a small burise. (cute photos)this is teh first of many falls and burise you well have with your little one. I just get the camera out once i know he is fine and capture the first black eye and burised knee.
