This condition is most likely Keratosis Pilaris. It is hereditary and sometimes people just refer to it as "dry skin". I have this on the back of my legs and arms. Some regular lotions can help, but to really treat it effectively you have to exfoliate the skin gently on a regular basis. Doing this physically irritates the skin too much, so I had a dermatologist reccommend using a lotion with beta hydroxy acid/urea/lactic acid in it.

Lotions I have had luck with

These lotions used to be prescription. You usually can find them in the diabetic supply area of the drugstore near the pharmacy or in the lotion area, usually down low near the bottom shelves. It is more expensive than regular lotion and it smells a little funny, but it works wonders if you use it every day. Once it clears up you can even skip a couple days in between and you are fine. Makes your skin very soft and smooth.

Good luck!

I'm looking for a product also, but I can tell you lots of vitamin A and C will improve any skin conditions (broken-cell algae supplements are awesome!)and I think some of the B vitamins are also linked to the bumpy skin issue...also A&D cream does wonders but is slightly unpleasant smelling and Vitamin E cream is the most often recommended that I know of. If I could buy anything I have tried in the past it would be the sesame oil from neutragena.

Hi S.-
I would love to help you with your bumps on your legs. I am an Arbonne consultant and we have wonderful products that we could discuss.
Arbonne is a swiss company that does not use any chemicals, dyes, fragrances or mineral oil in any of their products. I would need to talk with you more but I do think the products could help.

I am a Physician Assistant in internal medicine. It definately sounds like keratosis pilaris, as Andrea has suggested. It occurs commonly on the upper arms and on the thighs. It is NOT because of any vitamin deficiency or what foods you eat. It's genetic and is quite common. I suggest you follow the links Andrea has suggested and emolliants/exfoliators are the best way to go. However, be warned that this condition can be frustrating to treat, but is totally benign. Good luck.

I don't know about a permenant solution, but I have alot of success using St. Ives facial scrub on my arms (I break out there). I use it several times a week all over & I love how it feels. - I don't use it on my face though, it's too rough for me.

Couldn't be sure without seeing it but it sounds like Keratosis Pilaris. That's the medical name for your condition. It is caused by your body's inability to properly manage keratin; it comes to the surface of your skin as little acne-like bumps. Many people get this on their upper arms, upper legs, knees, cheeks. It's a condition that mainly affects very light skinned caucasians of western european or germanic descent. Unfortunately, there is no sure fix. The best thing you can do is exfoliate (sloughing off the dead skin around the bumps) and use a cleanser that contains an alpha hydroxy acid such as:

glycolic acid - sugar cane
lactic acid - milk
malic acid - fruit
citric acid - citrus fruit
tartaric acid - grapes

Different products work for different people. A good place to start is St. Ives' Apricot Scrub. It is called apricot because of the ground up apricot pits that make up the scrub, not because of the scent. You could also try the Neutrogena Advanced Solutions Microderm Brasion kit. There is an attachment kit for areas such as legs, upper arms, etc. However, the Neutrogena kit is approx. $35-40 plus the cost of the add-on kit. So you might try a couple of alphy hydroxy scrubs/cleansers first and see how that works for you. Try scrubbing every other day at first and if it works you can take it down to one or two times a week.

I hope that helps you and that you find something that works for you. As a life-long sufferer from the same condition, I understand how annoying and embarrassing this can be. Good luck,

R. T.

S., Im a CNA. Learning this only in class that those little red bumps are from a vitamin deficency. I would suggest taking a good multi vitamin or talking with your doctor about what you may be lacking based on your diet.
