We are a one car family and that one car is just about to die. We currently drive a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee with about 125,000 miles on it; we've had to have transmission work done, all four window motors have stopped working, thereby causing the windows to sink into the doors (we've got duct tape holding up two of the windows as I refuse to pay over $800 to fix them at this point, especially when the car is now only worth about 2k); we just had to replace the water pump and some other thingy that goes along with it. The lights come on by themselves when the car isn't on; we're only getting about 12 miles per gallon. The latest problem is that it stalls when idling. Twice now I've had to drive home, keeping constant pressure on the gas so that it wouldn't die; it's not a great feeling and not any fun at all, stopped at a light with both the gas & brake depressed, then have to ease up off of one and not the other and worry about getting rear ended by the impatient guy behind me. Ofcourse I expect some problems in a car with over 100k miles on it & it has gotten us down the road for 5 years. Researching Jeep problems online, I've found that TONS of Jeeps have these same problems; I'm worried that ours will start to stall not just when idling, but at high speeds, as it seems they begin to do after awhile. Or, another common issue, accelerate to high speeds by themselves.
So it's time for a new car, obviously. We haven't had to make a payment for this one as we were able to pay cash for it when we bought it several years ago. Unfortunately, we're not is the position to do that again; infact we've got little to put down on a new vehicle. My husband has only just started a new job after having been laid off & out of work for three months.
So, any suggestions on a reliable and inexpensive new(er) car? We're expecting a third child in October so we need to be able to comfortably fit two carseats & a seven year old. The main issue, though, really is price. We absolutely cannot afford a brand spankin' new van with built in DVD players and onboard maid service, know what I mean? Your suggestions, as always, are appreciated. And NO JEEPS! ;)
You should go to G-Town motors in Garland! I bought a 2001 hyundai sonata there and it work wonderful! I got it for $12,000. and i pay weekly and he only does 2 year loans. So you get car pd faster! But his number is ###-###-####. You can also go to www.gtownmotors.com and look at all his cars. He will really work with you! He has very nice cars and SUVS. Hope this helps you! Have a wonderful day!

Funny, one of my friends has a jeep and all of his windows are broken too. I have heard great things about Kias. They have small suv's and they advertise great warranties. Good luck.

Maybe you could find one in the paper or online? The cars are dealerships are always so much more expensive, and the financing is not always the best. If you don't have a lot of cash upfront, maybe a loan from your bank would be possible.

Well, I have a ford escape that gets 20-24 mpg. Its a 2004 and 50k miles. I'm locked into the lease and i'm not sure how it would work to have someone take it over but my payments are $359/month. I don't know if you could refinance and get lower payments over 60months or what. pm if you're interested. it's a great car we just got a new-used nissan quest. the other option is try the kia dealership. they will often do a zero down option even on their used cars. my husband has a kia spectra and it gets 29-32 mpg! great commuter car. good luck in your search!

In my opinion, Hondas are the most reliable cars. I have now owned 2 and have never had any problems.
