Nausea and Breastfeeding?

Our second daughter is 11 weeks old and I've been breastfeeding exclusively and plan to continue doing so. I breastfed our first daughter without any problems through 1 year. However, I've been dealing with on/off nausea/stomach upset since she was born. At times it seems that I feel the icky/nausea stomach feeling after I nurse, but it is not always right after nursing...other times it just seems random. I've seen my doctor- she put me on prilosec three weeks ago thinking I had an acid issue that started in pregnancy...it hasn't really helped. She said if we don't see an improvement this week, she'll order bloodwork, etc. I'm just wondering if there are other moms out there who have experienced this...I'm wondering if my hormones are still out of whack? or if something else was brought on by breastfeeding/childbirth? Any thoughts would be great-

What can I do next?

Could be hormones as well as general exhaustion, but I wonder if just so much nutrition goes into the breast milk that your own body is being deprived? I can suggest an excellent supplement, balanced and highly absorbable, that is totally safe for pregnant and nursing moms. It's formulated by the same scientist who developed the premier infant formulas Enfamil and ProSoBee, so he's a world-renowned expert in liquid nutrition. He also consulted for Weight Watchers when they came out with their food lines, helping to ensure that the nutrient levels were proper. Let me know if you'd like more info. I know a lot of people who have had much better luck on this than on prilosec or other anti-reflux meds.

Your doctor probably suggested this already, but are you drinking lots of fluids while you breastfeed? I did feel dizzy at first unless I drank lots of water.

I had this weird icky nausea feeling when I would first start to breastfeed. It was kind of a strange feeling that went away. It didn't last for long. Maybe you are lacking in some vitamins or iron? But mine went away, maybe yours will to. It may be the hormones.

are you eating enough, BF takes extra calories and if your not eating enough nutritional food your blood sugar could be getting low which can cause nausea. Also keep drinking lots of water or other non-calorie fluids...tea, crystal lite (because I hate plan water).

Next time it happens try to eat some toast with peanut butter and see if that helps, if it does my guess would be that your having low blood sugar, Hypoglycemia.

Since she'll be ordering diagnostic work anyway, I would suggest to ask her about your pituitary gland, there is a condition called chronic Sheehan syndrome that can begin insidiously after childbirth, and has to do with changing pressure on that part of the brain. Adrenal insufficiency issues can also show up with nausea, or a drop in blood pressure from some other reason (like dehydration). There is a blood pressure test where she can basically take your blood pressure after you have been lying down for a few minutes, and then taking it again when you stand up suddenly. A significant drop in blood pressure values can help diagnose the adrenal fatigue issue, or if your heart rate goes up quite a bit in compensation. MAke sure to let her know if you have any other symptoms, like headache or change of vision, or extreme fatigue.

Are you eating and drinking enough? While breastfeeding you need to add 600 calories to your diet. The average women needs 2000 calories, so a breastfeeding mum needs 2600 calories. Make sure its healthy foods, though, with lots of fruits, veggies, whole grains and healthy proteins, and minimal processed foods. Everything you eat is passed on to your baby. You also should be drinking 13 cups of liquid, mostly water, per day.
I know that when im hungry, I get nauseous. Hope you feel better!
