NASA And/or Space Camp Experiences?

Hi all,

My 5.5 year old is interested in the Shuttle and space program. We live in Fort Worth, so a "NASA" vacation could be fun, but I read something that said the "tourist" part is very out of date.

Has anyone been there and what are your experiences?

Also, if you have sent your kid to space camp, how was the experience? Is it sleep-away? What age do you recommend?

Thanks!

I have nothing but awesome awesome to say about Space camp in Huntsville. I was older but my brother was 11 so we went at the same time so we could travel together etc. My mom came for the last day for the awards and to travel to Nashville with us. One of the best weeks of my life. I'm not much of a joiner but I am such a space geek I loved everything about camp. It was great to be with other space geek people like myself. We all just clicked. I can't wait to go again with my son!!!

We have only been to Kennedy Space Center in FL. If you can take the trip, go there. I imagine there's more memorabilia there since that's the actual launch site...and Space X is now launching their unmanned craft from Cape Canaveral. My husband and boys loved it.

I signed my son up for space camp for this coming summer. He will be 10 and he has been doing overnight camps since he was 6. This will be the first overnight camp that is out of state, but I think he will be ready/enjoy it (it's in Huntsville). The space camp website has a ton of great information, so you might want to start there. The camps for overnight start in 2nd grade, I think. But, Huntsville is a great space center and you and your family could just plan a trip to visit it (they have stuff going on over xmas).

They also offer a family camp.

Good luck,
L.

We went with my oldest's 5th grade class to Houston. It was pretty good for the class because they got to stay after hours and do team building play. Otherwise, not so fun. It has been years so it may be much better.

Johnson Space Center in Houston has "Space Center Houston" for tourists. It wasn't too much fun in my opinion, but they have rockets you can get up close and look at and we did enjoy that. Kennedy Space Center in Florida is AWESOME! Plan to spend at least one entire day, but we could have gone back a second day because there was just so much to do. Now that they have closed the space shuttle program there may be less to see, though. Plus, you've got the beach in Florida. When I was young I wanted to go to space camp too! 5 is way too young to send him, though, IMO. It is a five day program http://www.spacecamp.com/camp/sc But the best Aviation themed vacation spot I've ever been was the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC.
