I would call the OB. There is also the concern of dehydration. It is ALWAYS safer to call. Congrats on the baby!
I was up last night for about an hour with severe cramping, vomiting and sweating. My guess is, it was food poisoning. I'm 12 weeks pregnant. Should I call my OB? I fell fine now, my concern is food poisoning for the baby.
Thanks everyone for your feedback. I really appreciate it. I did load up on fluids and got lots of rest the next day. Calling my OB today. But feel sure I'm okay.

Hi E.,
It might be good to call the doctor, just to be on the safe side. I hope everything goes well.

I had food poisoning when I was pregnant with my first and my OB said it doesn't effect the baby, but for peace of mind I would call them anyway. Good Luck.
I am an OB nurse. The baby cannot get food poisoning, so you don't have to worry about that. If you start to bleed or have any more severe cramping, you should call your doctor.
No worries for the baby, just be sure you get/stay hydrated. If it makes you feel better, call the doc, but the baby cannot "catch" food poisoning and is not affected by your vomiting unless you become dehydrated. Good luck.
Yes do call your ob. There is likely not much they can do regarding any exposure to baby. But you should call them and possibly get checked out. I am sure you are already avoiding the long list of foods that are off limits for pregnant women eg. soft cheeses, unpasteurized anything, sushi, anything undercooked, some cold cuts. But just in case, you could ask your doc for the list. Did you get a flu shot? That is important for pregnant women. If you are looking for a good book with lots of good medical info, then "The Pregnancy Bible" is great.
My rule when pregnant was: if you wonder whether you should call the ob, then call the ob. the worst that can happen is that they get one more question. Your OB should welcome all questions.
HOpe you feel better soon.
i would. better be safe than sorry. trust me, i lost twins at 23 weeks alomst 5 years ago.
Please call your OB and let them know that while you don't think it's an emergency, you are concerned about your situation last night. Women, especially pregnant women, should not hesitate to call their OBs when there is a situation out of the ordinary with their health. Better to call and inform your doctor and use his/her medical degree and experience to ease your mind about your situation than to not call.
If I ever had a concern I always called my OB. I figure it's better safe than sorry. And it's always good to ease your mind.
You can always call your doctor if you are worried. They will let you know if there is a problem or if you don't need to worry. I don't think you need to upset if you are sure you were just sick, but it can never hurt to call the doctor. If the cramping is just from being sick you should be fine.
Hi E.,
I had food poisoning when I was about 25 weeks pregnant. I ended up in the hospital for three days, because I got so dehydrated from throwing up. The danger is not the baby contracting food poisoning. The danger is if you get too dehydrated you can start having contractions, which is what happened in my case. Hope everything goes well for the rest of your pregnancy!

Please please please call your doctor
First time mom, at 36 yrs. old...........OF COURSE, CALL YOUR DOCTOR! Don't be foolish!
As long as it wasn't caused by a bacteria in deli meat/soft cheeses (called Listeriosis), I wouldn't worry about it. I got food poisoning twice during the first half of my preganacy, and the doctor told me everything would be okay. Just make sure you are drinking plenty of fluids to replenish your body of any that were lost. The cramping part is a little scary...I didn't get that from food poisoning. Just to be on the safe side, call your OB and speak with the nurse or the doc.
Better to be safe than sorry. I always called about the tiniest things. That is what they are there for and they make alot of money to answer our questions!!!
ALWAYS call your doctor. Make sure you and baby are ok and it is not something like an infection in your kidneys.
Hi E.,
Yes, get checked out. you never can be to sure.It could be your blood pressure and so with that just have it checked. You may just have had a 24 hour flu

at 12 weeks, the heartbeat can be heard, so just call and ask if you can just come in for that, a little piece of mind is never a bad thing.
I would make an appt with your OB/GYN ASAP. It is always better to be safe and make sure.

MOM OF TWO GIRLS, AGES 1 AND 3, 11 WEEKS PREGNANT WITH NUMBER 3.
Definitely call....won't hurt. Be on the safe side.
A phone call doesn't cost anything but peace of mind--Call!
Yes! Call your OB. I had a similar experience when I was pregnant with my girls. They always want to know about any illness you have no matter how early you are in the PG. It is also a good way to get to hear the heartbeat again...LOL...that sound never gets old!! :)
I would call your doc, but from what I understand, while it's severely inconvenient and unpleasant, food poisoning doesn't really hurt you if it passes through your system as this seems to have. Had it stuck around, it could have been something worse like Ecoli which definitely is bad. You can hear the heartbeat from 8 weeks on many times, so if you go in they can easily check the baby's state. Congrats on the pregnancy and don't let anyone, especially your doc, make you think you're at a more risk because of your age!
Yes, call your doctor. Fevers can be particularly problematic within your first trimester. You want to avoid overheating your core (this is why doctor's advise people not to rigorously exercise) as this can affect the baby's health. Request an ultrasound and check your baby's heart rate. It will give you confidence you know everything is ok. If you feel fine, this may be a good sign! :)
I dont think there is reason for worry, I would call and let the OB know what you experienced.
It is always a good idea to notify your doctor of any changes that occur during pregnancy.
Mother of 4 and a nurse :)
Yes, I would absolutely call your OB. Tell the nurse everything and that you think it was food poisoning. Ask if you should be worried. It doesn't hurt to ask. Better to be safe than sorry!
Yes! See your doctor even if you are feeling better. Pregnant women are at risk with food born illness. Just to be on the safe side your Dr. should know.
Hello! I saw that you did get a lot of responses but didn't see anything regarding what I went through. I hope you are feeling better now but just in case you might consider this...
When I was pregnant with my second son, I kept getting these spells where I would sweat really bad, have frequent #2 trips to the bathroom, feel like I had a really really bad flu. On occasion I would vomit too! They checked my heart, blood pressure blah blah blah. Everything was fine until they finally checked my sugars. I had gestational diabetes. I was feeling like this whenever my sugar would go to high. I believe that 5 months along is the standard time to check for this problem but if it happens again, mention this story to your doc. It would have saved me a lot of time feeling icky if I had been checked sooner. I do hope that this isn't the case for you and that it was just an isolated incident but thought it couldn't hurt to share this with you just in case. Good luck to you. Shannon
Definitely call. If for nothing else than some peace of mind! I"m sure the baby doesn't have food poisoning, but if you were vomiting a lot the dehydration could be an issue.
This is the kind of thing you pay your doctor for! :)
Hi E.,
I would call your doctor as the same happened to me about 24 weeks and it was food poisioning. Turns out I was having contractions as the baby was a little distressed due to dehydration....try to chug water even if it is coming right up but keep chugging....Dont be stressed but better to be safe than sorry
If you are worried that you may have had food poisoning and it may have had some effect on your baby there is nothing wrong with putting in a call to your doctor. It will make you feel better to speak with him or her and they can reassure you of any concerns you may have.
I agree with the other poster. Your biggest concern for the baby is staying hydrated. The more dehydrated you are, the worse. Drink plenty of fluids, get rest and you and the baby should be fine. Call your doc for reassurance or if you start having contractions or spotting.
i had food poisoning when i was 3 months pregnant with my first. i was scared about the baby too. as long as you remain hydrated you are ok and the baby takes what s/he needs from you. call your MD so that s/he can reassure you but i am sure the baby is fine. good luck!
I would say call, I'd rather be safe than sorry. It could also be a UTI, I had them thru out my pregnancy and experience much of the same symptoms.
You're probably fine, it does sound like food poisoning. But you may want to call your OB anyway just to be safe.
It may be your gallbladder. I SUFFERED through my second pregnancy with gallbladder issues. You should maybe ask the doctor if he/she could check this out. If it is you will need to change your diet or it will be HORRIBLE all through the pregnancy.
