My son has begun to bite his nails. His fingers look o.k., but this just seems like a weird habit for a little one. Any have any ideas or suggestions to redirect this habit?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

O.K. so I purchased the nail product, Thum. I plan to give it a try. I will report back in a week or so. It's very funny to me, b/c we are happy, minimal stress, so I can't understand why he would bite his nails. I am hoping the Thum product will work.
Thanks for the advice.

I am having the Same problem but with a 2 yr old. I went to the doctor about something else and decided to ask him about it. He told me since he was so young that there not doing it cause there nervious or its a habbit but because there curious of new things. He told me theres something called nail no bite or something to that effect and you can get it where ever nail polish is sold or ask the Pharmacy about it!I guess you put it on 3 times a day! Let me know if it works!

My daughter has been biting her fingers since she has been about 18 months. I hate it and find it weird since her father and I get along great, nothing upsetting going on in her world so I've always been confused about it. But she has just recently started cutting back on it right now at almost 3 (her nails even grew out enough to be dirty underneath I notice the other day!!!) so maybe he will outgrow it. I didn't think it was a big enough problem to address so I just ask her to stop when I notice it. Since she is a great kid and very happy all the time I just kind of let it go, pick my battles.....

Mine is doing the same thing. I always try to see what he is biting if its his nails or hangnail or what..
I think it is a phase.. but drives me nuts.

Well, I am a nail-biter myself, and it's a hard habit to break! My mom said I started biting my nails when I was almost 3 (right at the time she and my dad were getting a divorce), and now I'm almost 27 and I still bite them! I wish I could stop, but I can't! I hope your son does not continue to bite them for very long. Sorry I don't have any tips on how to get him to stop! Good luck!

I have the same issue. Not only does he bite his nails he also chews on his clothes. Someone suggested giving chewing gum. Another suggested putting bitter nail polish on their nails. It is just a bad habit and it seems like they are just nervous.

Hi R.,

My friend's 3 year old son has been biting his nails recently. She said she got something at the store that she paints on the edge of his nails (has a bad taste)---you might ask a pharmacist and see what they recommend. My 3 year old daughter has done it periodically and when I asked her why? she said that Grandpa does it!!

HI R., I don't know if this will help but I can relate. My son started biting his nails around 1 or 2. His Daddy bites his nails. So I pointed it out to Daddy, he stopped and so did my son, we made it his job to remind Daddy not to bite his nails. Giving my son (3 now) responsibilities seems to help his behavior a lot. I used to suck my fingers when I was little. My mom tried cyan pepper, black pepper nail polish, nothing worked until I realized it just wasn't good. Try explaining that it will make his fingers sick and gross and it will hurt and they will look yucky. Make it fun to clip them, or show him how to use an emery board. Just some Ideas. Good Luck!
