My Three and a Half Year Old Won't Eat Veggies.

I am sorry I wrote earlier this week about my son refusing to eat his veggies. I forgot to say that he is three and a half. Thank you for the responses about what to do for a younger child but what do you do for an older child. Any time I make him try them he gags and throws up. Do I keep pushing them?

What can I do next?

Hi B.!!
I feel your pain!!! My three and a half year old daughter won't TOUCH any veggies!! I have been able to get her to eat raw carrot slices, if I offer a dip, and she'll eat apples and bananas if I put out some peanut butter. I just had a dr. appt with her pediatrician, and she assured me this is very, very normal. She said don't make eating unpleasant at all. She said don't force anything, just keep offering. She also said that as long as she's getting her vitamins and her milk, then she's getting something. I make sure she has a serving of a healthy no-sugar juice, too, since that is at least one serving of a fruit/veg! Until then, I'm not giving up; I'll keep offering it! Good luck, and please know YOU'RE NOT ALONE!!

Have you tried making them fun at all? For example celery sticks w/ peanut butter and raisins ("ants on a trail") or making tomatoe wedges (as petals) and cucumber slices (the middle) into flowers on a plate...this may be more appealing for a girl, but since he's only 3 maybe he'll enjoy it too! maybe if he's having fun with them he might be more willing to eat them. Also, try different ways of serving them for example, sometimes try giving him cooked veggies like carrots or broccoli..if he doesn't like it that way, try it fresh (if you can get him to eat them while they're somehow fancied up). I know some kinds prefer cooked veggies to raw because they're easier to eat and have a better flavor. You could try serving the fresh veggies with dips also, look for something kid friendly maybe? low sodium? I know hummus is an excellent dip and healthier when homemade..if you need a recipe let me know! Any way to make it fun will hopefully spark his interest! Good luck!
And if this doesn't work, i'd try the juices or hiding them like some other moms suggested..seems like the best solution if nothing else works!

See if you can get him to just taste them. Don't force.Kids taste changes so often. So even if he eats just one string bean, or maybe try mixing them with something else. My daughter (now 18) used to hate vegetables, then see went through a period where she liked them. Good luck.

Blend them up in juice. Juicy juice has a line of juice out with veggies in it and it is good. I think it is called veggie harvest. Just apply the same concept. See if it will work.

i would suggest Juice Plus gummies. they provide the daily doses of veggies for your child. my daughter loves them and she gets her daily fruit/veggies through these supplements!! if you want more info, let me know.

Both my boys refuses to eat cooked vegetables (despite how I tried to hide them). However, they will eat RAW vegetables like carrots, broccoli and string beans. I put them out throughout the day on the table while they have TV time. Works for me and good luck.
